We're starting to even up the limbs now but that right limb is getting
a little "hingy" up at the dip. I'll leave that are alone.
We're still OK on weight.
Back to the vise! (3:30 pm)
Here we are at 23" of draw. I'm getting concerned about string
angle and the tips being whippy. The ferret brought that up and I'm
worried now. I'm gonna have to sleep on it. I weighed her and she's
pulling 40 pounds at 20" and 50 pounds at 23". That's all I'm gonna
be able to do on her for the day. I'll let a couple people look it
over and see what they think.
See ya tomorrow. I've got a busy day but I'll hopefully be able
to finish her at lunch. If not, some of the priorities might get
bumped. BTW, my boss walked in on me taking this last picture.
"What the hell are you doing" were the first words out of his mouth.
Ouch! Is anyone looking for an apprentice bowyer? I might need
a new job :-)
John--55" NTN@27" DRAW is SHORT for a straight-ended bow..What you might
do is make the REMAINING weight
reduction by shortening the rigid section somewhat and creating a bit
more bend near the dip/hand-section'...OR flip flop the bow
again to be for a left-hander, make yourself a thumb-ring and use an
asiatic loose...:)..Just out of curiosity, now that you are close
to your full draw, has the bow lost any of it's reflex?.....jim
I agree with Jim that you should get some movement into the dips of
that bow. This will help with the string angle at full draw and
may even keep the string on the tips. Looks to me that if you pull
much more with that profile the string may pull off.
Give a picture of unstrung profile if you can.
Nice work getting the hinge out. I would have worked both limbs though
while getting it out so you don't stress the hinged area too
much with the stiff limb pulling on it. is there any set at the hinge
location?
My replies:
Jim, I have lost about 1.5" of reflex. I'm holding 2.5" on a rested bow. About 1.75" after unbracing. You are right about the dips. I hopeI don't lose too much weight doing it though. I'm thinking I should be OK but it has been a learning experience one way or another. This is the first short bow I've built and tiller is much more exacting. You sure do have to get it bending sooner than in the 67-68"bows I have built before.
Keith,
Yes it took a set at the hinge. Not a whole lot but it's there. I'll give you all an unbraced picture here in a minute.
Thanks for all the help. I'm probably not going to get to work on it
too much today and I'm out of town tomorrow and this weekend
so it will likely be next week before we finish her up. Unless I bump
a priority or two :-0
Here's the current profile. It's holding better than half the original reflex after it is rested. Still getting about 1.75" after unbracing it. I'm fairly happy with that.
Here's the area of the limb that had the original hinge. It's got some set just to the right of where the string ends. That was because of what Keith brought up above. I was overstressing it by leaving the other limb full weight and just working on the one. You can see that if you look at the photos above and on Day 2.
I might get a little work done on it later in the day but if not, it
will be next week before we can finish it. It'll kill me waiting
but I think I need to think some more on it anyways. Take it easy.

The picture shows my efforts so far. Not much change huh?
Back at it (2:30).
