Recent Work at the Bowyer's Bench

Here's some recent stuff I've been doing.

Black Palm Bow

This is a black palm bow made from a stave I traded for with Mikki in SC (I think).  It's an interesting bow and quite beautiful.  The wood (I think it's actually a grass) is amazing.  You can see I had to do a couple wraps on it.  Anuy other wood would have blown way before.

Michigan Recurve

Here's a little recurve I made for a guy in MI in trade for an obsidian knife, some heads, and an axe head.  It's 50# @ 28", osage, unbacked, 1.1" wide, and 59" NTN.  It bends in the handle.  Sweet shooting bow and really quick!

Edge Grained Osage

Here's an edge-grained osage I'm making for a buddy.  It's from a leftover after bandsawing out a regular stave.  It is gonna be gorgeous when finished.  I just couldn't bare to throw such beautiful stuff away.  It's 1.5" wide, bendy handle, pulling 65# @ 22" right now.

Busted!

Here's a bow that I recently broke!  It was very thin ringed and I guess I nicked the back at that break on the right.  Even the rawhide backing couldn't save it.

Pushing the Envelope

I wanted to see how much I could get away with dry heat (heatgun) bending osage into a recurve.  This was obviously too much :-)  This was the leftovers from "Busted" above.

Here are the recurve jigs I used for this one and the Michigan Curve above.  Cut quickly from 2X4 pine with a couple notches for clamps

Osage Arrow

Here's an osage arrow I made.  It weighs in around 900 grains with the 220 grain trade point on it!

Utah Elk Hunt Bows

Here are the beginnings of 4 matching bows I am making for myself and 3 friends to take to a Utah elk hunt this year (2002).  We have spliced billets ready to glue up, 2 taken down to floor tiller and one still in stave form.

Wood from February 2002 Cutting Trip

Here's my share of the spoils from a recent osage cutting trip with Hackbow.  Enough for 20 or so bows.  Darren got enough for 30 or more.  We cut 3 particularly sweet trees.  One of the halves is pictured above.
