Hunting with the Little Delta Bow

December 31, 2004

Darren Shue and I have the special opportunity to hunt with a piece of archery history on December 31, 2004.  We thought we'd take some of you along.  For the full story on the Little Delta Bow, go visit The Tradgang Forum dedicated to it.

The Story of the Little Delta Bow

To make this even more fun, we're going to let you guys help us pick a spot.  The area we are hunting is a brand new part of the Morgan/Monroe State Forest in South Central Indiana.  It is called Ravinia Woods and up until this year was a privately held property.  The state bought it and opened it for hunting.  I have done very little scouting on the property and don't know what the pressure was like this fall.  I doubt we'll have a lot of competition on the day of the hunt.  The area totals 1500 acres and is mixed hardwood ridges and pasture with a creek bottom or two for good measure.  There is a lot of agricultural activity in the area, mostly beans and corn.  The tract that was purchased was only a portion of a larger tract.  Several other parties bought the other half and it is very restricted in the number of hunters allowed on it.  This serves as a reservoir of deer adjacent to the public land.  It lies to the west of the tract we can hunt on.

Here is the map of the land.

Here is the Microsoft Terraserver topo and aerial of the area

Now, using your best hunting skills and these maps, give us your opinion on where to hunt.  We have some ideas but we'll save those for later in the week.  Weather is supposed to be mild, 40 degrees and maybe rain.  This area had 18" of snow last week and there should be some left.  Prevailing winds are from the west but I bet we'll have some south to that and it is very broken terrain so wind will be tough on us.  We plan on stalking and maybe pushing some areas.  We are hunting all day.  There may be a third person in the group and we will have the option of hanging stands.

To make this easy to understand where you want us to hunt, use the parking area, marked with a "P" on the map as a reference point.  Give us your best guess from that area.

Since we are hunting with an old Bear Bow, I figured I'd hunt with some old Bear Arrows and a Bear head.

Here's the Hunt

Darren hunted the morning with the LDB.  We split up and planned to push a little knob that seemed like a good bedding area at the west side of the property.

I started out in this beautiful little creekbottom.

I got to the top of the knob and found this old logging trail that had rubs and tracks galore.  I'm looking south here towards where Darren had posted at the base of the knob.  I stillhunted down to him, about 400 yards away.  Weather conditions weren't great.  55 degrees.  The wind was strong with no apparent desire to maintain a consistent direction.  Mostly out of the southwest but hit just about everywhere within a 15 minute period.

I found an old tortoise shell on top and decided to get some nice strikeplate material.  Before and after.  Tim Ott taught me this little trick.

There was plenty of sign that the deer were still around after being pounded during gun season.  One point had several piles and a couple indicated the deer were eating just fine.

Must be at least a couple bucks using this area based on the numbers of rubs and old scrapes.  This one is pretty fresh.

After not pushing a thing I hit Darren on the radio and told him to meet me in the bottom.
I decided to fling one and of course deflected into the knot on the log.

Darren was amused :)

We stumpshot our way around while trying to kick something up.  Here's one of  the shots.  Please note Darren's arrow which is not in the stump.

Another great shot by Johnny boy.  I have no idea where Darren's arrow is.

We switched bows at midday and I got my chance with the LDB.

Finally at the end of the day, Darren stood bewildered at my shooting prowess.  We stillhunted our way back to the road.

I gave him one last chance at the car.  A beer can had obviously accidentally fell from someone's vehicle along the road.
It was barely visible and of couse, I nailed it with the LDB.  It hits with magic.  Darren missed :(

My trophy with the LDB.  It was a great day, with a good friend, and a neat bow.  Thanks go out to Mike Huston for letting us use it.
My last shot of the year.  A hit at 20 yards in the dark.  Magic I tell ya'!

Hero Shots
I guess we need some hero shots besides the beer can.
Here ya' go!

A world record bear.  And a huge non-typical deer.
