Dan's BBO

This bamboo backed osage (BBO) is for a friend in Alaska.  I am late in getting it to him.  I hope he forgives me :-)  He is planning to use it on caribou if I can get it to him in time.

Here is the first pull on the long string.

It shows the typical strong midlimb.  Since this is a reflex-deflex style, the dips look hinged but they are really not bending much at all.  It'll start to unfold as we go a long in tillering.

The left (upper) limb is a bit weaker than the right.  It is unfolding just a bit earlier.

I like to get a string on this style bow as soon as possible.  It looks like I am torturing this thing by doing so but remember that the handle and dips are defelexed so they aren't really bending at all.  She's starting to unfold a little better.  I have the midlimbs on both limbs a little stiff yet.  I bet a few more scrapes and she'll really start coming around.

Ugh!  This picture looks a lot worse than she does in person.  Got lots of work to do.  Midlimbs are still way too stiff and the right (lower) limb is stronger than the left by a fair piece.  She'll come around.  Have faith.

After a little more work with the Bowyer's Edge, I got the limbs unfolding a little more at brace and they are fairly even

Here she is drawn to 24".  The left limb is still stiff from the fades through midlimb and a bit weaker than the right (lower).  The lower limb needs a touch of weight reduction to match the left limb but it is bending nicely.  Weighing in at 45#.  She'll be mid 50#s at 28" after finishing.

Coming round nicely now.  Left limb is still strong in the middle and weaker than the right limb.  Right limb is beautiful but a bit strong.

Looking really good.  I fear for weight though.  She's 48# at 26".  I'm going for mid 50's but I bet she finishes out right at 50#.  I think I can cut an inch off each limb and bring that up.  We'll see. Still got a touch on that left limb in the middle.

I went ahead and cut her down 1" per limb and brought the weight up to 56# at 28".  She's looking pretty good now on the tree.  Still a little stiffness in the left (upper) limb from midlimb out.  I left the tips a little stiff since I shortened her to help with the string angle.  String angle causes stacking. And we don't want that now do we?  She draws an even 3.5 pounds per inch the last 6" of draw so she is pretty smooth.  I'm ready to start shooting her in.  She is now 61.5" NTN, 56# at 28" of draw.

I got Dan's BBO tillered.  She's 58# at Dan's 29" draw.  I gave her a nice red and black dye job and sprayed a couple coats of poly on top.  She looks nice.

A nice handle wrap and off she goes to Alaska.
