November 15, 1997
Walnut Hill, FL
This day was the second to last day of archery season in NorthWest
Florida. I hunted that morning on Richard Sheppards stand he had
at Brushy Creek for for ever. I was about 12-14', wooden ladder stand.
It had no seat, so I had to stand all morning. Anyway, the
land that our club was on was owned by a Paper company. They sold
it to a guy in Pensacola that wanted to build houses on one part of it
and use the rest as his private club. Anyway, we had to be
off the land on the 18th of November. So, to make a long story short,
about 6:30 that morning I hear trucks driving around. I thought,
"what in the world are these guys doing driving around this early when
people are hunting. I could hear them talking and joking, I was really
annoyed. They were getting there stands out of the woods before the
18th. Our club had allot of gun hunters in it. Anyway, back
to the hunt, I hear fast moving steps in front of me, it was two nice deer.
Big, whether they were bucks I do not know but I bet they were.
They were slipping past me fast. I was mad, If those guys were
not getting there stands those two deer would have slowly moved through
and I would have more meat for the table.
That afternoon I hunted the same stand hoping that the two
deer would make there way back through the area. About 4:30
I hear movement to my left. It was a spike. I wasn't sure if
I would take him or not, but I figured," why not, tomorrow's the last day
anyway." I watched that buck slowly browse up to me, then almost
behind me, then he turned back to his left and came right next to my stand.
He was 10 yards away. I placed my pin on him and it was all over.
He jumped on the hind legs, kicked at his chest and ran off. I heard
him double up not 30 yards away. I went and retrieved my arrow and
followed to faint blood trail. I could tell it was a lung hit. I
found him 20 yards later. Out of the four deer I harvested that archery
season, he was the most fun. All the other deer came up I shot and
they left. I was able to watch him for some time before I shot him.
I can't wait till next archery season.
