Traditional Bows Drawn, Pg8

The pictures shown on these pages are all in Thumbnail form. You may simply click on any pic to see an original, larger version. After viewing the larger print click the "Back" button in your tool bar to return to the Page of thumbnails.

Row One: 1) Due to me "snoozing" the first offer of this adorable Full Draw pic ("I didn't see the first offer, honest, Ted" - LOL), I choose young miss Cassidy Kinny, Daughter of Ted Kinny, to start off Page8 for us. Cassidy was part of a plan of her father's to keep her grandfather occupied by shooting with him (and sweet-flirtin' him), while his son, Ted, tried to lift one of his Brack bows. Relax, folks - just a tongue-in-cheek thread from outdoorcore.com .

2) Matt Torno of Buffalo, TX, Sends us these great photos of shooting with his children. His 5 year old son, Connor, and Matt at Full Draw. Matt shoots a 60# Zipper and Connor a 25# Martin fiberglass.

3) Matt Torno and Daughter, Hailey. Ya can never start 'em too young. Thanks for the pics and for loving this project, Matt.

4) "whitebuffalo", Jason Bobb, of Michigan and tradgang.com, at Full Draw with his 55# Martin Mamba Recurve. Jason sends the following pics of his family.

5) Jason and his Wife, Michelle, in a duo Full Draw. Michell shoots a venerable Bear Kodiak Mag in 45#

6) Jason, at full draw, Daughter Hannah well on her way there, with her Black Rhino Youth bow, while his wife has just loosed her arrow - good follow through, Michelle. Thanks so much for letting us join in your family shooting fun, folks.

Row Two: 1) "mijnhobby", Mark, of Holland and paleoplanet, in a beautiful and interesting Full Draw pic taken in his father's taxi service lobby, where he displays vintage autos that he also rents (with drivers only!). the bow is a selfbow by mijnhobby and is 79.4# @ 29.5". Beautiful arc to the bow IMO, and great use of his surroundings.

2) A second appearance of "gferlitsch", Gordon F., of paleo planet with a fantastically repaired and refinished VineMaple bow of his. He loved shooting it, and it lifted a splinter so he repaired it - in Aces. This bow is pretty enough to hurt the eyes, with a finish to match - you really need to check out Gordons thread and pics of it. I was blown away. Gordon won a Primitive Archer Bow of the Month award back in Dec with one of his Vine Maple Bows.

3) Another old friend and no stranger to this web site, Army CWO Scott "Jumper" Nicholson sent us this Full Draw pic of Lieutenant Samantha Kruper. Samantha works in the same unit as Scott, at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, and she is "trying on" this beautiful bow that he made for her as a Christmas present, while he observes his handiwork.

4) Scott also sent this Full Draw pic taken of him on snowshoes at Valdez last winter. No lack of good backgrounds up there, huh, Jumper?

5) Bryan Burkhardt, of michigan and tradgang.com has sent us five interesting Full Draw pics for these pages. Bryan travels a lot and puts many interesting posts and pics about his hunts and scouting on tradgang.  This one is Bryan Bowhunting in MI, and he is up a tree there a ways.

6) Here, Elk hunting in Idaho. What a beautiful place to launch an arrow! You may have seen Bryan a little better with his Musk Ox and also a huge Artic Hare in the most recent issue (Mar., '07) of Traditional Bowhunter, in a Bowhunt Adventure article.

Row Three: 1) This is Bryan's Dad, Marvin Burkhardt teaching his Granddaughter Samantha Burkhardt, early on.

2) Here, a little older Samantha showing good progress with a Full Draw on a Great Northern bow.

3) This is Danielle Burkhardt (Samantha's younger Sister) at Full Draw, also with a Great Northern bow. The sharing is appreciated, Bryan.

4) "shootrmn", Clinton Hooten, of Idaho was kind enough to send us this Full Draw pic of him and "Dragons Fang", his 55# Tred Barta longbow. Look out Whitetail and Elk! Thanks, Clint.

5) "Fredrick H", another of Sweeden's bowyers on board. Fredrick Hagblom says he used a "really crappy" course-grained yew stave for this selfbow "just to see if it would work". His advice - "Don't throw those bad yews away!" Fredrick says that while it took a pretty good set it is a "nice, smooth shooting" bow, at 55# @ 32". I love the arc of it.

6) This is another Full Draw pic of my good friend, Dano Gren. This photo is what I'd call "bowfilled", However Dano is show casing a bow that he got in trade for one of his great Osage bows. He and "rocdoc", Doug Rutter , entered a pact to make a bow, each for the other. Now they are both swearing they got the best of the deal (in a thread on tradgang.com). Me? I think they both have been "gifted by the gifted." Beautiful bows at both ends of this rope IMO.

Row Four: 1) & 2) "nate", Nathan Ricard of Canada, back taking one of his fine bows out for some fun in the snow, along with some of his other hand made items. Nate showed us bows at Full Draw on Page5, Rows Five and Six.

3) This is nate's friend Barb at Full Draw with his latest bow, a Christmas present he made for his 8 year old cousin. Way to pass it on, nate. The bow is a Board Bow of Red Oak, 50", 15# @ 23" and another one to be proud of.

4) & 5) "Pink is in!" Kevin brown and Randy Grider - I'm an ol' Irishman so "Wearin' O' the Green" is nothing new, but here I practiced, "Lifting of The Pink" - since they are out airing pink fletchings and didn't send me the Full Draw pics on their own hook - LOL. Out for a weekend of shooting, and pink feathers are easy to see/find.

6) Another of Ryano's striking bows at Full Draw. This one is an Osage selfbow with Diamondback skins for backing, static recurve tips, 57# @ 28". Ryan posted them along with some mighty nice looking "Trappings" also.

Row Five: 1) On the previous page I posted a pic or two of friend Pat Brennan, with a couple of his bows. Since then another friend of his, Don Berg ("Old Bow") made this collage for him with his Paint Shop Pro, showing his bows he made last year - (at Full Draw of course). I think you'll find it interesting, though you'll have to click on the larger pic for sure. I know you'll love Pat's bows. Enjoy. I believe Pat's April Osage is the one that took April Bow of the Month for him in Primitive Archer Magazine. It can be seen in the Fall, 2006 issue.

2) "toxophileken" passing it forward "to a Full Draw" with a youngster that was brought to one of the CA bowyers gatherings, using an experimental Greasewood branch Bow that he was working on that weekend. Why? Because, as we all know, - that's what it's really all about, after all is said and done..

3) On that same outing Ken and a couple of his friends were invited to spend a couple days making bows at PaleoPlanet's founder's, ("Paleoaleo" - Tom), home. They each compleated about three bows or partials thereof - prolific rascals! This is Sal, "Salvador6", with another of those beautiful laminations of Black Bamboo Backed Ipe bows that I love the looks of so well - and this one is no exception to that.

4) "Paleoaleo", Tom, (looking a little different in his cap, and hiding his chin whiskers) at Full Draw with one of his Osage selfbows. Also a beauty in it's simplicity.

5) Ken, himself, Normally the photographer, caught with a nearly finished Howard Hill Bow that he finally got to where he could put a Full Draw on it. It kills me how "toxophileken" can stand flatfooted and draw heavy bows like this and more - this one right now is around 85#.

Row Six: 1) Another of "Brutus Hedgeapple"'s fabulous backlit pics that lend themselves so well to traditional archery. This one of his good friend, "Mystery Dave" at Full Draw, while they were hunting some islands in a lake in KY.

2) "Yew Archer", Steve Junior Moore Full Draws his latest bow for us, in the basement shop of his new home. This fine bow is a Snakey Osage selfbow of 70", 68# @ 28". It has linen wraps on both limbs but only for decoration.

3) & 4) "tpoof" (on Tradgang, Primitivearchery, and Archerytalk forums), Terry Popoff , sent me these Full Draw pics of himself, in the inviting backdrop of his home area in East Central Saskatchewan. Makes you want to grab a bow and go fling a few, doesn't it? Terry is relatively new (1 yr) to his computer but he has always had a strong bond to archery, and is always shooting bows, as well as building beautiful selfbows and arrows. Fantastic work, Terry! Terry says it is a hobby that gives him great satisfaction. He also enjoys our Traditional Bows Drawn section.

5) & 6) Another thoughtful Dad passing it on. "NativeArcher" of tradgang and NY, Mathew DeStefano, showing his son the "early" ropes. I thought these pics would help remind us that Full Draw is different for different folks but it all has to start somewhere. Mathew says his son gets, "so excited" - I'll bet he does!

Row Seven: 1) & 2) Noah, son of Rick Moore, at Full Draw with his first longbow, and then with his first Custom Bow, a 3piece Recurve. Rick, at 42, has had occasion in his recent life to realize a very important thing that we all should realize.  Being that we should never leave things to be "done later", for we never know just what may be in store. He had very kind words about this web site and it has inspired him to take action he has considered regarding one for him and Noah. I am very happy to loan any advice that I can to help with his project.

Note: The next five Full Draw pics I was able to capture, today, at our first (combo) shoot of the year for Hubert Archers, Shooting at Flatwoods Outfitters, in Hubert, NC. Some of the traditional shooters that I was not able to get pics of at the last shoot of last season, in Dec.

3) Don Batten of New Bern, NC (Who just happened to take 1st Place in the Traditional Class) at Full Draw with his Black Widow Bow.

4) William Batten, Don's youngest of three sons, took 3rd Place (actually a tie for second but less tens moved him into third) , follows his Dad's example in bows also, with his own Black Widow. A couple of fine trad shooters and chaps. Oh, and they joined our club today.

5) Hugh Overstreet, a shooter from Wilmington, NC,  that likes and helps support our shoots as often as possible. Here at Full draw with his Black Wido longbow, 49# @ 26".

6) Jason Cole, also of Wilmington is one of a number of shooters that Hugh has urged to attend our shoots along with him. Jason is showing us his Full draw on his Checkmate T/D Hunter, 52# @ 28".

Row Eight: 1) This is the current President of our Hubert Archers club, Dave Bishop, of Jacksonville, NC. He is at Full Draw with his Great Plains recurve bow of 57# @ 28". Dave slipped in between Don and William Batten to take 2nd Place, by virtue of quantity of tens.

2) Finally got a Full Draw pic of one of our favorite folks on tradgang, Doug Campbell. Not only is he a great bowman and hunter but also the maker of some of the most beautiful hand forged knives available. I happen to be so lucky as to have one of his small Damascus Steel neck knives - due to the generosity of my "Canadian brother", "Harl". Doug Runs a large ranch in Montana  and is pictured in the horse training ring (building/arena) of that ranch, where he does a lot of his bow practice - when not out shooting Prairie Dogs. He is at Full Draw with a Sinew Backed Osage bow made for him by one of the best - his long time friend and boyhood chum, Tim Ott (Doug is as lucky as me). He calls his Tim Ott bow "Buster", and loves the way it shoots. Doug is also the driving force (money colector/handler/transfer-er - LOL) behind the Tradgang Annual St. Judes Childrens Hospital Auctions, which gives you an idea of the full trust he always generates in folks from all over the world. A highly thought of Cyber-friend to many (and one of the most modest men I know of)!

3) A visitor from Valencia, Spain - "dantolin" on paleoplanet, David, in thier mountains over there, at full draw with his first (beautiful work) selfbow of Hazel - 64" and 30# @ 28". I think we'll be seeing more of David's work.

4) "Te Waoko", Sam has been visiting in CA from NZ but it is now time for his return - so he has boarded his transport to New Zealand. Uh - no the canoe isn't the transport. That is a shot set-up at Oranco in CA where Sam and some of his CA friends joined for a final shoot before his departure.

5) Folks out there, and members of paleoplanet are going to miss seeing Sam, at get togethers and in pictorials by Ken, and others - so these three "s'long" pics of Sam at Full Draw, from the Oranco shoot.Sam was using one of his Osage bows.

6) Ken reported that Sam is taking a "boat load" of items, that he built while here, back with him - bows (a half dozen or so), armguards, quivers (including one made from a Yucca stalk). Plain to see he has not been idle while on vacation. Safe and pleasant Trip home, Sam. One of the many best things about the traditional archery family is "Good friends well-met and remembered."

Row Nine: 1) This interesting Full Draw pic of Jon Lopez (Pasadena and paleoplanet) is also from the Oranco shoot where Sam was bid a fond farewell. "One foot must be touching the aiming stake." . Thank you, Jon for the nice comments, and signing of my Guest Book - it means a lot to me.

2) Tom Mills, "Paleoaleo", founder of Paleoplanet, with his "Copper Age Bow". This Full Draw pic was taken the previous day to the Oranco Shoot, when the Pasadena Bowyers got together to also say fare thee well to Sam. Tom's Copper Age Bow is one he made all with tools and materials available in the copper/stone age that he fashioned or found himself - just to build a truly (as close as possible) primitive bow. I can't help but wonder if any of those "good ol' boys" from back then got any to come out that nice?

3) I received a couple questions about Sam's Yucca stalk quiver so here is another picture showing the finished beauty real well. Great job, Sam. He is at Full Draw with Ken's Howard Hill Bow in this pic. I'm sure we will hear/see more of "Te Waoko", and his talents, from his home in New Zealand, via paleoplanet.

4) "ky longbow" of outdoorcore.com braved our southland's unseasonably cold, below freezing in the daytime weather these days to do a little shooting. He also broke out this fine looking snakeskin backed Hickory selfbow that he built in 2004, and hadn't strung for a couple years. Looking pretty good at Full Draw and the shooting went well too.

5) & 6) Stovie is at it again, this time making a fine looking and drawing little primitive selfbow of Hazel. He found the "pole", split it in half, used a spoke shave to rough out one stave, then scraped it to shape the handle and tiller it out to a nice little 30# @ 28". Now he is at Full Draw with the little beauty, and later he'll put a leather handle wrap on it and thin the nocks down a little. Nice pics to enhance our Traditional Bows Drawn pages, Stovie.

Row Ten: 1) John Beckwith, AKA "Archer 1" on tradgang.com, at Full Draw with a Howard Hill Bow of 62#. I don't know much else about John - yet, except he sent me this fine pic and wished me well with the Traditional Bows Drawn project. What more do I need to know? Thank you, John. Oh, I did find out John hails from Harrison, Michigan.

2) Thimo, on his Birthday, no less, gave everyone else a present. He did a thread/pictorial on paleoplanet taking a piece of Bamboo flooring from how you get it at Lows, etc. to a basic, simple, primitive, shooting bow in a matter of a few hours. All with tools you have around the house. Then he showed it to us at Full Draw, from the kneeling position. Nice gifting, buddy!

3) "Mechslasher" on paleoplanet at full Draw. Chris, I believe. He is a High School Biology teacher in SC, who relaxes by making fine looking bows, like this Osage recurve beauty of 64", 63# @ 26", and he says this one is a fast shooter.

4) "Huntrdfk" of tradgang.com, and my Birth State of NH. David Kretschmar and his son Hunter at Full Draw for us. David is one of NHs fine law officers and a great guy and cyber-friend. A couple years back (maybe 3 now) he shot a bearded hen Turkey and sent me the wing bones. I made two wing bone calls and painted the "Old Man In The Mountain" of NH on each - then I sent one back to him. All of that is recorded in the gallery pages of this web site. Now we both have a very meaningful token of our Home State link. David is drawing his Kempf Kwyk Styk here and Hunter his own Black Rhino bow. Welcome aboard, guys.

5) Hunter ("The Yellow Hooded Ninja") again with his black Rhino (Fine youth bows!). Hunter doing his best to mirror his Dad's great form. David is also going to get me a FD pic of his Daughter and Hunter's Sister - so I will leave the final spot on this page open for her.

6) "Huntrdfk's" Daughter,  Avery - OK, OK - so this is after the Full Draw but sometimes with kids (as we've discussed before) it is all just about flinging an arrow. Besides look at that beautiful blond hair and all the vivid colors, not to mention the excellent follow through, rock solid bow arm, and that determination on Avery's face. She dares that arrow to go astray. Besides, David will get a Full Draw pic for us later but, for now, this fine family of bowshooters finish this page off for us in fine form. Thanks, David.
