Traditional Bows Drawn, Pg4

The pictures shown on these pages are all in Thumbnail form. You may simply click on any pic to see an original, larger version. After viewing the larger print click the "Back" button in your tool bar to return to the Page of thumbnails.

Row One: 1) "Sunset" & 2) "MoonHowls" - "Stovie" of Paleoplanet.com provides these two magnificent pics of friend "Wellsy" drawing a 70" 50# @ 28" Oak Flatbow. Stovie and Wellsy were on a camping trip and building a full size Tipi for a pending Boy Scout Campout in three weeks - and having a little bow fun while they were at it - great stuff, guys.

3) Here is one of our Tradgang.com friends from "Down Under", at full draw with his longbow (that he no longer has - but still a nice one). Jeff Burgoyne ("Wolfman Jeff") hails from Aukland, New Zealand where he is retired and loves to hunt and shoot with his bow.

4) Here at Full Draw,  with a Red Oak board bow, and from CA is the Founder of PaleoPlanet.com, "PaleoAleo" (Tom). Tom is a Knapper and also is known to make a primitive bow now and then - you should check out his "Copper/Stone Age" thread/pictorial where he made a short bow from scratch with a handmade copper Adz and primitive tools. Tom is a frequent poster on the planet and well liked and listened to.

5) This is "123Sharo" (Iliana) of near Sofia, in Bulgaria. Iliana is already a Lady Bowyer of note with her beautiful first selfbow (you must check out her thread to see the bow in it's full impressive beauty) 65", 25# @ 25". The bow is Ash with Osage Handle and nocks, rawhide backed with great color and decorations. She also makes her own arrows.

6) "Your's truly" assaulting your eyeballs again - this one from about 4 or 5 years ago, and from my "Old Man Up A Tree" pictorial on my regular Gallery Pages. I was testing my shooting with my (then) Bear Cheyenne Recurve from my Ol' Man treestand, in a tree on the edge of my home shooting range.

Row Two: 1) "Big Jake"'s youngest of 4 (3 Daughters), Dani, Put a sneak and a Full Draw on a field mouse (dressed just as she arrived home from Pre-school) with that pretty Rhino bow of hers, and she did him in too. Full pictorial is on outdoorcore.com. Welcome to my Full draw pages, Dani.

2) "nedmiller" runs Crow's Head Outfitters and ordered himself a "rough cut" Horse Bow. He then sanded, painted/decorated, and clear coated it, as well as leather wrapping the angled areas ("Syahs"). Here Ned gives us a look at it, at full draw. More pics of bow cam be seen on outdoorcore.com and tradgang.com.  The bow is 50# @ 31". Nice job (and some Draw) there, Ned.

3) Introducing Eva McCormick - pic provided by her boyfriend, Aaron London ("themonkey", on tradgang.com), of VA, , with her blessing of course. Eva is at Full draw with her Bear Black Fox 40# bow at an indoor range. Thanks folks.

4) & 5) are a couple Full Draw pics I took just this evening (11/14/2006) at our local archery club meeting, of Tommy Mosman, a retired Marine, former boxer, active trapper and tanner of hides, with his Samick T/D bow and a quiver he made for himself. You'll see my friend Tommy in other pics in the Gallery Pages of this web site - winning Traditional shooting awards, etc. Rough - we had a meeting of our (mixed) club - 7 members showed - all trad shooters and, of those, only Tommy brought his bow. I think we need a shot in the arm! Well, in their defense, they knew it would be dark by 6:30.

6) Here is a young bowyer who is advancing quickly. "stickbowaddict" of Paleoplanet.com refers to this Red Oak bow with an Osage Handle as his new flight bow. It has static recurve, is 60", 55# @ 27" and is quite "fast". Good work, "sba", I'm sure you have many, many really nice bows in your talented hands.

Row Three: 1) This colorful image is long-time cyber-friend "chortdraw" (Dale) of tradgang.com (and other forums). "Chort" is an archer, bowyer, hand carver, leatherworker, hunter, all around handy crafter and goodguy in so many ways. He calls this his "Short Longbow" and made it himself last year. It is 54" and 43# @ 24" (Chortdraw, remember?) and has an Actionboo core, Bocote riser, with Bocote limbs and Clear Glass. Chort also says it is great for shooting from the kneeling position in tall grass or under limbs. Quiet and quick - just right to use on Javalina as he will do in Jan. - he made that draw, as well as this Full Draw. Good luck, Chort.,

2) "Bull Grizzly", another close cyber-friend, Daniel Quevillon, from the wilds of Canada (Northwest Territories) is a Master Knife Maker and a Caretaker of his fellow man. He worships and praises his wife Sylvie, who is his right hand and a fantastic leather worker who makes unreal sheaths for his knives, etc. He had this picture taken specially for us today (11/16/2006), on this beautiful day there. (Info on his bow later, after he gets through "playing" with his snowblower.). The bow is his Mike Miller "Crooked Stick" bow.

3) & 4) A well-known personality and figure, Ron LaClair, with his Otter Pelt hat, and then with his woolen hood up, at Full Draw for us with one of his famous Shrew bows, also sporting a replica 18th Century knife (based on one excavated at Fort Ticondaroga) and its new (but period correct) sheath. Ron is traditional archery's well known "modern mountain man" (IMO) right out of the pages of yesteryear's stories and books. He is a member of his home State's Archery Hall of Fame, the designer/producer of the Shrew bows, and has contributed much to the field and lore of traditional archery. He remains a friendly and helping hand to all who seek it on tradgang.com and in the dealings of his Shrew archery supply and bow business. What a pleasure to count you a cyber-friend, Ron, ol' Hoss.,

5) This is "Stovie", The other part of the "Team" that built the Tipi mentioned in the first two pics on this page, and the one we got those pics from. Another great Full Draw pic from that outing.

6) Steve Junior Moore, ("YewArcher", of paleoplanet) is a bowyer who loves Red Oak for making his bows. Here he is at Full Draw with a Holmgaard type bow he made of Cherry Bark Backed /Red Oak. Thank you and send more Full Draw pics anytime, Steve.

Row Four: 1) Here I am (again - I warned you I'd do this if you didn't get "yours" sent in). Ready to launch the first "Flu-nutter" I made, with my 21st Century longbow, "Texas Slim". The Flu-nutter is made from a 5/16" Ramin dowel, flies like a hard-hitting freight train and whistles like Al Jolsen.

2) This young lass having a great time is Suzanne Travis, 8 year old Daughter of Mark Travis ("HeadKnocker" of outdoorcore.com). Mark sent his Full Draw pic in earlier in these pages. Suzanne is drawing her fine Herters Perfection bow and just loves to shoot with her Dad. Do you have your "younger" shooting and, if so , do we have them in these Traditional Bows Drawn pages yet??? Thanks, Mark and Suzanne.

The next fifteen pics are from another great pictorial and story on Paleoplanet by "Toxophileken". Believe me it is worth checking out. It is a report (and more) on the Glenn Foster Traditional Rendezvous near Fresno, CA, put on by the Fresno Field Archers. Ken's love for the sport, and his fellow archers, shines through the report like the California sunshine - trust me on this.

3) Ken,s good friend John ("Greensnake") at full draw, on the horse. Just one of many innovative target set-ups at the shoot.

4) The other shooters in their group watch John draw down. The guy at the far end kinda looks like (and could be, since it is in CA) Mike G, of Mike's Archery Leathers - or maybe his Uncle. Don't know though.

5) John at Full draw, off the ledges.

6) John, from a simulated tree stand.

Row Five: 1) I really like this one of John - talk about focus.

2) Now for Ken - and I do believe he is - yes, he is - sitting on a "John" (pun intended).

3) Ken, off the simulated tree stand, and the arrow is away but he is still in that good position of the "Full Draw" follow through,  it looks like to me.

4) Ken, ready to release on a 3D (looks like a Puma), about half way between him and the little shed.

5) This is Sam ("Te Waoko" on Paleoplanet), from New Zealand. He traveled "quite a distance" for the shoot, and to meet some fellow bowyers from that forum - but only from Southern CA - I think he moved there recently, as I recall. Ken said that Sam had a blast and everyone really liked him, big time. The first couple of pics, Sam is shooting bows made by Ken. This one is an elb.

6) Sam, shooting a Mapleboo bow by Ken.

Row Six: 1) Another shooter gave Sam an Oak board, and he quickly (?) worked on and finished a bow with it and shot it for the rest of the shoot - and these pics. Sam, crouching a Full Draw, with that Oak bow.

2) Sam, stretching out with the Oak.

3) Sam sits the horse also.

4) Sam even got a turn on (or, off) the "John".

5) Sam, in a kneeling "Full Draw". Can there be any real wonder why we love the "curve of the bow at full draw"? Hope everyone enjoyed Ken's great pics as much as I did, and thanks again, Ken.

6) "aussieyeoman" (Dave) of paleoplanet.com (and Australia) with one of many varied wood combos he makes into beautiful Laminated bows and then puts his entire focus into for a Full Draw on them. Like on this 47# @ 28" Iron Bark with Bamboo. Ain't it a dandy looking bow?

Row Seven: 1) This is Andy ("tomasaf24" on Paleoplanet), an active Air Force man doing his best to protect our freedoms. He also happens to be a bowyer, when he has time. Here he is putting the Full Draw on a little Character bow of Mulberry, that has more twists and turns than a country road, and yet he still coaxed this fine, beautiful little shooter out of it - 63", 40# @ 26", that anyone would be proud to own and/or just shoot.

2) "gordonf" of tradgang.com displays a beautifully stained and Truoiled bow he made of Vine Maple. This particular one is 48# @ 27". He started out to make a bow, for a friend of his, to hunt elk with, but it came out a little light. However, it was just right for him, so this one will become his for good. Just one of the benefits of being a maker of great bows.

3) "Sparky" of paleoplanet.com, Roger, picked a good background to point up the color and the curve of this pretty bow at Full Draw. Rich Saffold blessed him with some Ipe and Black Bamboo materials (I am really liking these Ipe/BlackBoo bows I'm seeing lately), and Roger made this beauty that he calls Skinny Minnie - 72", 59# @ 29", with Buffalo Horn tips, Ivory inlaid strikeplate, and sporting a paraffin finish. Sparky says the more he shoots it, the better he likes it - I can understand that, though it's a little heavy for me - LOL. I hope this won't be the last of Roger's fine work we see at Full Draw.

4) Bill Kunkel, "Shakes.602" on tradgang, of Crawfordsville, IN at Full Draw. Friend Bill one time sent me 5 very nice 5/16' wood arrows he made for me and i liked them very much. Only trouble is I let a guy I was selling a bow to try they and he liked them so well he wanted the whole set-up. Bye-bye, Shakes arrows. Looks like a Bear bow Bill is using there (but a lot of bows do) He'll let us know for sure. Turns out the bow is an old Cavotta Bros. bow (out of NJ). I have always liked all of theirs I've seen, especially the ones they made for kids. I bought a number of them for resale, and they always sold fast. This particular one Bill has passed on to his Son Forrest. We should see a pic of Forrest later.

5) Mike newcomb, "mnewcomb59" of paleoplanet, is a young bowyer from Ohio, doing pretty work, and this is another Ipe and Black Bamboo beauty in his hands. 67" from tip tp tip, and between 55-65 # ( Mike misplaced his bow scale, temporarily). Mike calls her "Cookies 'n Cream", because of the wood colors but also because he put a top white nock and a bottom black one, with a black and white strikeplate on her.  Mike also bought his materials from Rich Saffold, I understand, and I think this was his first laminated Ipe and Black Boo. Neat name - neat bow.

6) Our First "Mainer", Jim Davis, of Clinton, Maine slapping a Full Draw on a very nice 48# White Ash Pyramid bow. Jim is the designer and maker of Reparrow Footings for repairing your wood arrows - a most interesting and precise concept. Check out his web site at http://www.angelfire.com/biz/ironwood/woodbows.html

Row Eight: 1) George D. Stout the forums, poet emeritus, especially about archery and hunting, drawing a Carroll Take down. Thanks for sending this to me, George, and for starting the thread about the "old" guys at full draw - which brought a bunch more.

2) This is "Dick in Seattle" (Richard P. Weightman), WA (of course) and tradgang, with his Full Draw entry. Dick has a connection to George Stout through "their" traveling Howard Hill bow. He also has a number of personal web sites and links available (check any of his posts for links) that cover not only one dedicated to Howard Hill type bows and shooting of them but also his life as an entertainer, his myriad of hobbies (like Archery, antique sewing machines, quilting, etc.), and more stuff than the law allows. I have only scratched the surface, and already know his sites are as extensive as mine and that Dick is another interesting person in our midst, for sure.

3) A well known hunting figure/hunt arranger from TX, and emerging author, Curtis Kellar, "Little Feather" with what he calls a "Cold Draw", taken in Oregon - before the snows flew. We hope to be seeing more of Curtis and some of the folks that have hunted with him - soon, thanks to his Dad.

4) Well known and well loved Charlie Lamb, who can take a "snappy" photo and spin a really "likely" tale to keep our interest on tradgang. Charlie is a former Marine and great guy/hunter out of MO.

5) and 6) Someone recently said in a thread, "Naw, Charlie was never that young," about a photo they were trying to tag. Well here are a couple that Charlie Lamb sent me that prove he was young - once (so was I, buddy - LOL). Thanks for the pics. They are called "cat rock 1" and "Crowhunt68R"

Row Nine: 1) Another well known gent, and no stranger to a pen, John Nail, from IN. Everyone likes to listen to, read, and apparently (in this Full Draw pic) watch John.

2) Major Focus here, and a great portrayal from Rob Bingel, "VA Bowbender" of tradgang. I love this picture! Rob says he "constructed" it and that it might be the Rhine River in the background but he's not sure. Ron is a meat cutter and manager by trade, who makes his own arrows and Flemish strings by choice. The bow is a custom Predator by Ron Pittsley, of 56# at 30 1/2", and is the latest of his 10 bow trad bow collection. It has Bamboo core limbs with Black Locust backing, with a Bubinga and Maple riser. Thanks for the pic and info, Rob.

3) An impressive scenic Full Draw picture from "joeVt" (Joe Marrier) who hails from the state where most all of my Irish forebears migrated to from their Port of Entry, eons ago. Joe says this may not be quite Full Draw but will be shortly - you can tell it's already in his mind's eye.

4)"Roy from Pa", of tradgang, Roy Painter, who builds bows and arrows when he's not Servicing Computers (or is that the other way around, Roy - LOL?) Nice looking place.

5) Roy also sends this playful Full Draw pic of a (former ;^)) "Friend" of his. I thought it was of Billy Goat Gruff but it's not. Roy will give us more info later.  The gent at Full Draw is actually Mike Windus of PA . His bow is a Bamboo Backed Osage that he made himself. Pretty bow and also a nice looking place. We are getting to see some nice backgrounds. (I didn't ever have that nice a place for my Goats when I was a kid.)

6) "Peter" (Peter B.) of paleoplanet and MI (Marquette during the school year and Otsego summers), is a young University student and very much into the Primative Arts. Here he is at a very respectable Full Draw with a Sericeberry self bow he completed a week ago, and he is already working on another. This one is 63" and draws 60# at his 26" draw length. It is pleasant to see young folks so interested in the Primitive Arts. Keep up the good work, Peter, and send us a Full Draw pic of your next bow(s).

Row Ten: 1) Meet "Ryano", Ryan O'sullivan, a self bowyer from Waterford, PA. Like many of us, Ryan hits most all of the forums from time to time. After seeing posts about these pages he came to see for himself, and, much to my pleasure, decided to send some of his Full Draw pics with his own self bows to me. This one is an Elm, with  recurve tips, of 53".

2) Ryan Full Draws his Flatbow, in the PA snow, 64".

3) Here a neat collage featuring "Ryano"'s Sinew Backed Osage, with recurve tips.

4) is Ryan's Osage selfbow with deflex and reflexed tips. As I told him, fine bows, nice pics , and a good Irish name to boot - hard to beat that combo - LOL.

5) This is Joshua Stark and I liked what he had to say so well I decided to just use it:

"I'm on at tradgang and thought I'd send you a pic.  This is my AIM T/D 55# at full draw.  Late this year, this bow brought down my first deer ever (17 years of hunting northern California with compound and rifle), a fine Blacktail doe in the Coast Range mountains outside of Fort Hunter Liggett.  This is my first trad bow, and I am never going back!  In a matter of a few short months, I went from wheels to making my own arrows.  Now when I go into the archery shop, I am amazed at how many things folks are sure they "need". - Joshua"

6) James Vaughn, "BamBooBender",  finishes off Row Ten and Page 4 for us, with the Full Draw of a Red Oak self bow he made to come out  60# at 27", and with the promise of more pics of him (and his son) at Full Draw, showing, "more of the beauty of the northwoods" (WI). We'll be looking for them, James, as we move on to Page 5. BTW - That arrow James is using is a circa '50's POC and is still straight as ... an arrow, though he says the feathers are showing their age some now.
