Traditional Bows Drawn, Pg3

The pictures shown on these pages are all in Thumbnail form. You may simply click on any pic to see an original, larger version. After viewing the larger print click the "Back" button in your tool bar to return to the Page of thumbnails.

Row One: 1) What a great pic to start off Page Three with - since it is all about passing it on - Grandfather Gene Eakins ("BodarkOkie") took cutipie 2 1/2 year old Granddaughter Mia to the 20006 United Bowhunters of Missouri Rendezvous at Hermann MO where a bow was made for the little tyke  - and not five minutes later her Grandpa was teaching her how to shoot for the very first time. How Saweeet it is!

2) Denny Sturgis Jr sent me this neat photo of Full Draw that was one of the considered shots for the label on his new DVD "Masters Of  The Barebow". The DVD is getting really good reviews from our trad friends and it sure has a slug of talenteed well known archers in it. Thanks for the generosity, Denny.

3)"Jgbennett6" (Jake) of the forum OutdoorCore.com submits his powerful full draw on his bow "sweetness3" - Jake is from Cooperstown NY and Boston MA and makes knives and leather goods.

4) Kurt Haugen ("Drifter") on tradgang.com shows his full draw from a raised platform at a 3D shoot with his 1985 66" Assenheimer T/D Bow. Kurt also was kind enough to supply the next two pics from his "wallpaper" folder

5) is Chet Stevenson 21, and 6) is Saxton Pope at full draw - that's Art Young on the ground waiting his turn. Thank you, Kurt for the nice additions from our trad history.

Row Two:  These first three pics also Harken back - but not as far as the previous two - just back to Row Six, pic 6, of Page Two here.

1) This is the same young lady (I believe her name is Bambi) in another pic drawing a "Stoute Longbow" of Yew. 2) & 3) Now meet the lucky boyfriend who is also the very capable bowyer of these beautiful, heavy, Yew "Stoute Longbows" that he categorizes as War Bows - (I believe his last name is Stoute and hope to verify info).

4) Has also been seen previously in these pages - Rich Saffold - a bowyer of CA with another of his gorgeous, slim Black Bamboo Backed Ipe bows - don't ya just love it's "draw form" ;^)?

5) This is Garland good friend of Ron and "bullcreekboy" (Shannon King) all of MO - Garland made his own selfbow and hunted with his two "wheelie" toting friends for years. Slowly he inducted them into the wonders of traditional bows and finally the making of selfbows. This year Garland's selfbow broke and he was too busy with family and job to do anything about it. Ron and bullcreekboy decided to make their good friend Garland a bow. What are (SUPER) friends for? They came up with this Bamboo Backed Ipe with Osage, etc. handle layers. Don't it purty? 65" 62# @ 28", and

6) Let's try it kneeling. bullcreekboy said Garland was blown away when they gave the bow to him but that he could shoot very well and consistent right from the first time he took it in hand. This bow, by Shannon King, took October Backed Bow of the Month for Shannon in Primative Archer magazine. The award article can be seen in the February/March, 2007 issue.

Row Three: 1) through 6) This bowman and fast blooming bowyer is Keenan Howard who hails from the Archery/Bowyers Section of PaleoPlanet.com (as do those in Row Two also, BTW) Keenan, while recovering from heart surgery is trying to plan his own web site to help promote a widening of his career choices. He has done steel fabrication out of a shop at his home as a main business (started working steel at the age of 12). However at 45 he is feeling a little "burned out" with that. Along the way he bowhunted for thirty years and started making bows. Now with more and more folks wanting him to build bows for them, his love for making bows is leading him more in that direction with the idea of getting away from the steel some day. His last picture here he has titled Laburnum Dream. Thanks for the interesting Full Draw pics, Keenan, and a look at your classy bows. Keenan is also "luv2hunt" on tradgang.com.

Row Four: 1) This young Full Draw budding bowman, also in a tree, is Nikita the youngest (six year old) son of Aram Oarcea ("Aram" of the Tradgang 06 Arrow Swap) - I met Aram and his large family at Baltimore Traditional shoot this year (Nice bunch!). Aram titled this pic "ThatOne!" and before we all have the usual heart attacks associated with  boys growing up, and climbing trees, let's remember most all of us usually wind up in the trees with our bows sooner or later - LOL. Next time use a Safety Harness though, Nikita - we need all of our young archers.

2) This is Shannon King ("bullcreekboy" mentioned in Row Two) at full draw with one of his selfbows he makes - a BBI (Bamboo Backed Ipe - I really like the looks of those BBIs) 63" 56#@25"

3) Shannon's Son Wyatt draws the bow his Dad made him from Elm 44" 22#@20" also wearing a quiver by Dad

4) The "King's"  Daughter Alyssa sports another fine draw on Shannon's Sassafrass (Good choice for Alyssa - she got she game face on - LOL) 36" 8#@18" with a pink Ostrich riser wrap and matching Quiver - also compliments of Shannon. You do sweet work (in bows, quivers, and kids) there, "bullcreekboy".

5) Here Shannon draws another Elm of his own making in 56" 71#@25".

6) To finish out this row here is another pic of the pretty and personable Chrissie Lutz of GA that I took when we were all shooting together at Hickory, NC this past year. I thought I had lost all the shooting pics I'd taken when I had a puter crash earlier this year but I found this one on my Photo Bucket Album while looking for something else. As I recall, Chrissie's bow is a Kim-sha That husband Chris got her at the close of ATAR the year before.

Row Five: 1) Chrisie's husband Chris on a hunt with his Son Slayton who took this Full draw Pic of him. This family tends to always be back to us but that's OK as we are going to show their mugs in our regular Gallery, Pg12 - check 'em out.

2) & 3) are time for a couple older Full Draws from my Gallery Pages that I like and feel should be here also - first, old and good friend big Tom Anderson ("Native Craft" - who has now moved to Wilson, NC) giving my little ACS a workout back when I first got it, and next old cyber friend Mike Gemind ("Beartracker") of WV, who gave me my first wooden arrows when I switched to all trad, giving his own ACS a workout - both great guys/friends.

4) is a pic sent to me when I asked my friend (who came to my house for a shooting day) McRae Harriss ("Woodduck") of the Roanoke River Valley here in NC to lay a Full Draw pic on us. He didn't have a new one so he asked if this old one of him with his first longbow would do - I love it! He says he hasn't changed much (Ahem!) and is still a kid at heart - well when it comes to bows perhaps - a pretty darned good shooter too.

5) Think Mc has changed much? We tried to get Mc's avatar (for a more recent look) from tradgang but he couldn't find the original so "Admin" had to send me a copy of the small one. Therefore the "click on" larger image is a little fuzzy but then Woodduck claims sometimes he is too - and he'll send us a replacement when he remembers where he put it on his computer - LOL - been there, done that!

6) Speaking of "Admin", the very helpful and talented computer Guru of tradgang, here is Rob DiStefano out from behind his arrows in his old avatar (down from NJ) and at Full Draw for our pages. Rob has gone to the trouble of restoring and preserving a complete set of a now defunct traditional magazine issues on DVDs and sells them to those interested at basically zero profit. he also makes fine bowstrings. Oh, this pic of Rob was taken at the Mod Meltdown Shoot in May down in Laredo TX - Rob said great place, great time, great folks. Thank you Mc and Rob for the pics.

Row Six: 1) Art Young's turn came and now Saxton Pope does the watching - our friend Kurt Haugen (of Row One above) has provided us with a couple more grand pics from our Trad past.

2) Ishi the last of the Yahi Indians - note that his Full Draw was a lot different than most of ours.

3) 4) 5) & 6) are pictures of a cyber-friend  "Toxophileken" from Paleoplanet (Knapping and Archery Forums) and are only a small part of a very interesting and informative Pictorial Essay thread about "Out of Position Shooting". Warning: Do not try some of these positions without reading Ken's thread and further warnings! (Or maybe without consulting your Dr. first - LOL) It is a dynomite thread for info as well as pics. In this first pic Ken shows his "Normal" good form with his Hickory selfbow. He uses the same bow throughout but after staining and finishing it. Keeping good basic form, Ken practices shooting from all sorts of  "Out of " positions, for more accuracy and confidence. It also aids him in more shot opportunities/options in hunting and or 3D shooting. His thread is definitely worth checking out and I thank him for letting me use some of his fine Full Draw Pics for our page here. http://p081.ezboard.com/fpaleoplanet69529frm13.showMessage?topicID=4890.topic

If that link does not work for you (it may not on some computers) try Copy and Paste of it or just write it down and then type it in - if all else fails go to PaleoPlanet.com and then go to their Archery, primitive bows forum.

(Please, don't forget to come back here after you check out Ken's thread.)

Row Seven: 1) I love this latest full draw pic from Smiths, AL and Chris Funk, who lives on the AL/GA line. Chris is a Plant GPO and Unofficial Wildlife Manager who is also a reader, and soon to be member, of tradgang.com. Watch for him to be telling us the story of taking his first trad deer on opening day this year - after 3 years of heartbreak - we know the feelings, Chris.

2) This special Full Draw pic comes to us from Christchurch, New Zealand where right now Spring is blooming beautiful, as you can see, while we move into Fall here. This is Samuel ("TeWaoko", which means "The Bushman" in Maori). Samuel is a bowyer and made this , his first D Bow, for a friend. The bow is made of an American Red Oak board, is 72" and 50# @ 30", 1.5" wide tapering to 1/2" nocks. Thank you so much for joining our little parade of Traditional Bows Drawn, Samuel.

3) Back on Page 1 the Haag Family Drew their bows for us but it seems they left one little Haag out, as he didn't have a bow yet. Knowing you can't start 'em too young, Father Curt made 2 year old Zach his own bow out of a Red Oak dowel. Do you think young Zach looks happy about getting to Full Draw? You betcha!

This morning we are joined by a contingent (five) of our brethren from across the border to the far north - all  Canadians from Ontario who get together a couple times a year for a Rabbit hunt, or just stump shoot (depending on the Rabbits and the weather). This year it was a Deer Hunt that turned out to be a Shoot - rain all day Sat. and gale force winds on Sun. My good friend "Harl" was charged with getting the pics and sending them to me and he said it was still a great time just to get together with a group of guys you only get to see a couple times a year. Notice these guys have to "heavy up" on the clothing to go do a shoot.

4) and 5) are of "Luke",  the youngest of the group but it seems that this young feller is not lacking in shooting ability , bowyering and other archery product talents, or just plain savvy and outlook on life.

6) Is the first pic of "Jim", who is a bowyer of good standing up there.

Row Eight: 1) this is also of "Jim", and Jim owns Mississippi Lake Longbows.

2) and 3) are "Jake H" who submitted a picture earlier on in these pages - welcome back, Jake.

4) and 5) are of a well known rascal, Cary ("Big Dog"), who named and won a bow from Dryad Bows.

6) Last but far from least is "Harl" himself, Tom Davidson Thanks for these pics, guys and Tom. The beautiful bows that Jim, Cary (Big Dog), and Jake are shooting are Jim's Mississippi Lake Longbows - you can see why Big Dog speaks of them often. Luke is using a Spirit bow and Tom is carrying the fine Morrison Shawnee T/D. We'll "talk about" Tom on the next Row - LOL.

Row Nine: 1) "Harl", (Tom) has done his utmost to help me (among others) so much in the last 3 or 4 years in pursuing my self-assigned attempts in trying to keep threads going on good causes (especially for the kids), raffles, auctions, Dino Wrangling and the such along with sending me a very special little Doug Campbell Damascus steel knife. I could not ask for a better, more sincere, helping hand and cyber-friend in these matters. It is no surprise to me that he would help in this project also. God Bless you, Tom Davidson. BTW if you are brave enough to want to see "The Face of Harl", check out the first pic on Gallery, Pg13 - LOL.,

2) From Germany comes "Jaberwok" (Achim Berlich and his good looking family) - those who follow tradgang and or this site know that my cyber-friend, Achim has helped me with my personal Logo (on the Index/Home Page) as well as other computer related quandaries, and we have actually spoken via a near-free phone service. A very interesting man to hold conversation with. In these pics the family is at a 3D shoot in Volkmarshaugen this past August.

3) Daughter, 7 year old Anna concentrating on her "Spot"

4) Son, Lars, 5 years old (Lars was at full draw but it took the pics a little while to get here from Germany so the arrow is awayyyyy - LOL),

5) Wife, Karin Berlich showing good form on a 70's model Wings, 66", 25# @ 28"- ya gotta love to see families that all shoot togeter - bless you all., and

6) Here is Achim ("Jaberwok") getting down and serious for one more Full Draw with his Border Kestral, 45# @ 28". Beautiful countryside over there, huh? Thank you so much Berlich Family, a pleasure to have you with us. Note the children are shooting a kids bow that Achim picked up at a yard sale (my kind of people - LOL) but since they showed interest and progress Anna is now shooting a Rebel recurve 15# @ 20" and Lars now has a Bamboo bow that Achim made for him about 3 months ago (pics to come later with the new bows).

Row Ten: 1) Another Bowyer, this one a "Neighbor" from Chile, "Mr K" (Jose Charpentier), with his first bow. It is a Flatbow of Linque wood, a native Chilean Wood that is very good for bows, Jose made it 72" and 60# @ 28". Nice job, Jose and welcome to our Full Draw section.

2) From Chile, we travel to Sweden for this Full Draw pic that Damon Kent ("aquerogringo" on paleoplanet.com) sends to us. A few years back he made a Hickory selfbow and sent it to Sweden, and of several pics they took and sent back, this was his favorite. Really a nice addition to these galleries. Damon also sent me a box of very nice Basalt (rocks for knapping) that he collected in Mexico and sells some of. Perhaps he will also send us a full draw pic of himself and any others he may have that "fill the bill" so well - thank you, Damon., For the rest of the row, Damon Kent, Bowyer and Knapper, from  Arizona has sent us some more Full Draw pics, with bows he's built, and I will be filling in the bow, etc. info soon. Like now - LOL  -

3) This beauty is a Silk Backed Hickory,

4) is a Sinew backed Edge Ringed White Ash,

5) is a Sinew Backed Osage, and

6) is also Silk Backed but of Maple. Beautiful bows to my eyes and this young bowyer is very prolific and you will be seeing more of his bows at full draw in these pages/galleries.

We now move on to Traditional bows drawn, Page 4 and i hope you enjoy these pics as much as your host does.
