Traditional Bows Drawn, Pg2

The pictures shown on these pages are all in Thumbnail form. You may simply click on any pic to see an original, larger version. After viewing the larger print click the "Back" button in your tool bar to return to the Page of thumbnails.

Row One: 1) We continue with another friend of our "Canadian Cousins" who happens to be "Linc" (Lincolin Farr) a friend of the Bone Family (on the previous page) and a friend to many on tradgang and at shoots. He is also a tight cyber- friend of mine (who I didn't recognize at first in this pic - LOL). Here he is shooting at the Deerslayers Shoot this past June 2006 Linc is also a knapper and promoter of that aspect of our fine sport and helped me get started as he has others.

2) Mysel-ef again (after all they are my pages - LOL) shooting my Barb Bow from Frank Rago at our get-together at Falling Creek in Goldsboro NC.

3) 4) & 5) are some more pics of Terry Green ("Tarz") of tradgang.com at full draw in some very interesting landscapes he has visited - thanks for taking us with you Terry.

6) As most of you know this is my (and your) dear friend the late Barb Dumas and no project like this would be complete to me without including her to be with us all. No, she is not drawing her bow but I am trying (even as we speak) to get a picture of her (and him) from Rick Dumas, doing just that. Barb didn't like being in pictures, though she took many, and the few I have access to, I had to beg her for, and none are Full Draw. But as most of us know, she was a Stump Shooting Machine and loved it. She also did Shoots some, and was even planning to hunt. So now she hunts and shoots with us, her friends, by means of the many gifts from her that we take along with us. "Welcome, Friend Girl, to these pages to help us keep an eye on our Full Draws.

Row Two: 1) How fitting it is that "The Ferret" (Mickey Lotz) chose this very morning and moment to sent me his pics. Mickey is well known for his generosity and his selfbows (and other primative archery gear) as well as a lot of other things - good natured demeanor being one. I would have been glad and honored to receive his pics anytime but he is shooting one of his selfbows here known as "Little One" and it has a story you may or may not know but bears telling here. "Little one is an OsageD bow with horse hair tassle that Mickey named after his Daughter. His Daughter weighed 5 ponds at birth and he always called her that so when the bow was completed on her 29th birthday it was Naturally "Little One" also. Ferret had made the bow for our dear friend Barb Dumas (see above row) in exchange for one of her well known Elk hide Lakota quivers. After Barb's untimely passing Rick sold the bow to Stan Stout ("Crosseye") of Ill. Stan then sent it to Mickey as he felt he should be the one to own it again then. Of course Mickey made a new bow for Stan. It is a wonderful world, this one of traditional archery that we walk in.

2) is Mickey's equally well known and loved wife Dianne (his right hand for 32 years) - she is shooting her Rocky Mt recurve of nearly twenty years - these folks believe in long relationships - LOL.

3) Meet Joe Blackwell another of the really great kids I've met in trad archery - quite a shooter too as he proved to me at Baltimore this past year, and

4) Seven year old Joe's intense focus and really nice "hook" for shooting his Osage stickbow.

5) also with an Osage stickbow is Joe's twin Sister Emma - I didn't get to meet Emma but I'm sure she must be neat too, and

6) the proud father is Woody Blackwell drawing his 58#@28" Blacktail - trust me Woody is a shooter (and loves it) He also is one heck of a nice guy and father not to mention arguably one of the best and most knowledgeable knappers in the Country (with videos and CDs/DVDs on the subject to his credit) - not to mention a hunter to boot.

Row Three: 1) Curtis Cardinal ("C2") sends these first five pics in this row to regale us in our pursuit of the Traditional Bows Drawn ( and Semper Fi to you to brother Curtiss) - here he is just before releasing from full draw on his Marriah Thermal 73#@29" bow at a 300+ pound hog. He made a great running shot with 18 folks watching - talk about fire under pressure!

2) is "Dalebow" (Dale Charles) at an IN Traditional Bowhunters Ass'n Shoot followed by

3) his shooting wife Ruth Charles at the same shoot, also

4)Brutus Hedgeapple who provided that great silhouette shot earlier in these pages, and finally,

5) "Crookedstic" (Mike Miller) is the bowyer of all of the bows in these 5 pics except Curtiss' - you make shavings, Mike!

6) Is another of a family of bow drawing folks - the youngest. He is Hunter the son of friend Brian Aliff, an artist from the WV mountains and designer/maker of all the beautiful trophies and T-shirt logos for the famed ATAR shoots Brian also made me a special shirt designating me as the "Offical Dinosaur Wrangler" for ATAR - I love it! Brian tells me this story about Hunter and his bow: The bow is a Kentuckian. While attending about the third ATAR Brian and his wife were looking around the vendors' goodies and carrying Hunter. He wasn't even walking then. Brian's wife said, "Look at that cute little bow." When it was turned over they saw on the back of the bow was scribed, "Mighty Hunter" and Brian truly felt like he was hit by lightning. Eighty bucks later Hunter was the proud owner of a bow he couldn't shoot - yet. Brian says at 4 years old now, Hunter is making up time fast. So we see, so we see!

Row Four:  David Geritz ("No, this isn't David, sillies") of Holland ("Yes, land of the windmills and tulips.") has provided me with invaluable help with a program (free) and help/instructions in easy resizing of pics for my web pages. Now he also provides us all with Full Draw pics:

1) This is David's Beautiful Daughter Sabine (Beautiful name too) at the Open Archeon (Dutch term, I think) last summer at which she took Fourth and was just barely out of Third.

2) That shoot must be done all in period attire and gear (bowstrings are the only allowable modern materials) Sabine is shooting a spliced Orange Osage bow by David

3) this is Mark, a friend of David's at the same shoot drawing a Maple bow that David also made.

4) Sabine ("You need a passport to go to Holland and besides the very pretty Sabine is 14 years old - and the apple of David's eye - so sit tight, Guys!") at Hollands first all Horsebow Tourney held last weekend (Oct., 2006)

5) Here is David The Helpful shooting 3D with an Osage 55#@28" of his making.

6) David at the all Horsebow Tornament with a borrowed bow - and he took the Silver!

Row Five: 1) One more of David Geritz shooting at their range with his favorite bow - a spliced Hickory of 57#@28" - that he made of course. (I think that "Spliced" may be Dutch for "Laminated" but not sure - 'cause I found out from David that "map" is Dutch for "Folder". See, this is an instructional site) - [LOL - I received a correction from David - seems that "Spliced" is an English term that he got from The Traditional Bowyers Bible and means exactly what we should expect it to mean with wood. As I said to him, it's funny how "where" our mind is at the moment colors the way we think, isn't it?] Thank you forever, David for your help and the pics.

2) Larry Murray of Lost Nation Archery sends this nice pic of him and his first Board Bow ( he says, "first bow ever, if you don't count those things I fashioned from sticks as a kid.") - I'm no bowyer but look at the pretty, symmetrical curves.

Note: These youngsters on this row are the nephews of "Toxophileken" from a knappers and bowyers/archery  site at PaleoPlanet that I also go to. I (shhhhh) "stole" them because we love to see youngsters start out right in archery and Ken's post beamed with the enjoyment he got out of taking his "well-behaved" Nephews to this shoot.

3) Four year old Luke at the mock-up Warlance Target.

4) Luke  trying flight shooting - he is doing his best to follow his bigger brother 7 year old Zack's fine example of drawing the bow.

5) Zack displaying his form on flight shooting, and

6) Zack and Luke both. Great sequence, Ken, and guys. More added info from Ken now: The Tomahawk Shoot is put on by Oranco Bowmen of China Lake CA. Zack's bow is made of Black Locust and his quiver from Yucca. Luke's bow is made from a post hole digger handle so probably Hickory or Ash. Also their arrows are salvaged from reworked broken and discarded adult arrows. Neat info, huh?

Row Six: 1) "Killdeer" (Kathy Collister) at full Draw provided especially for this new section of my pages. This is one of my very dearest friends of all time (and I have some dear ones). Well-known, well-read, well-respected, and well-loved - brimming with intelligence and a sense of humor and quick wit that everyone appreciates on the forums we habituate. Soul-sister under the skin to Barb Dumas, and "Wonderment" to her fine, and head-shaking husband Clark. Don't get crossgrain of her though as she can be a formidable opponent in a trading "cracks" contest. "Love ya, Lady."

2) I promise this is the only c-c-c-c-compound you will see in this section - not because I have any thing against wheelbows or am a "snob" but because of what this section is - "Traditional Bows Drawn". However, When I asked Killie to send in a full draw pic she complied with a message that said simply, "I'll give you a choice," that's all. This message (she never thought I would use it), this pic, and her caption for the pic, "Compoundinterest" are so typical of her wit, humor, and mischief that "it" just had to be inserted. I do think I would have captioned it, "Compoundconfusion", though. Thank you Killie, (Maybe I can find some brave soul whose pic I can put beside you to put us back on track.

Oh wait, I know,

3) Herrrre's Barb - 'course she'd probably just aid and abet you as usual but at least she is holding a trad bow and maybe she'll enjoy keepin' an eye on you - LOL.,

4) Just a little backup for Barb (like I said - it's my pages) drawing my 21st Century ("Texas Slim").

5) Anyone who is backing up Barb in keeping an eye on Killie needs a trusty sidekick so here is our "Cohort In Quip" Daniel "Dano" Gren, Former Marine and soon to retire from his civilian career so that he can devote full time to making those fantastic Osage  Selfbows and Cane arrows and knives, etc. and go to even more shoots. (As you will note on the left hand edge, I gotta keep an eye on Dano too - LOL.) Shooting at ATAR06 where we all finally got to meet him and here he applies his own Full Draw on a difficult target.

6) This picture of a fine Full Draw is provided to us by Stoute Longbows of Holland for which we thank them profusely and I hope to have more info on the pic and bow(s) to add soon.,

Row Seven: 1) This is Lucas (as I recall) at full draw with one of his Horse Bows at the fantastic Horse Archery show he put on at The Baltimore Bowmen's Traditional Shoot this past Spring. This picture was supplied by Stephen Kendrot who Killie and I met with his engaging Daughter and charming Wife at that shoot. We happened to be standing nearby as they bought a bow  from the fine folks at Elk Ridge Archery for the young lady and I felt compelled to comment on both her demeanor and her happiness after which we had a nice conversation with them.

2) Here is Stephen Kendrot's beautiful inside and out Daughter Allie showing just great form and concentration with that fine Elk Ridge Youth bow her folks bought for her - "You are really doing good, Allie."

3) Trent Bloodworth "singlestring" makes his contribution to these Full Draw photos that he says he is really enjoying - as so many of y'all are - I thank him and all of you so much for the response and the visits. Trent is from Kentucky and is shooting a good ol' Bear Kodiak Magnum.

4) Ron Andrews shows us how the very popular and highly thought of Martin Dreamcatcher looks up close and personal at Full Draw - Ron has his game face on too doesn't he?

5) Submissions have slowed a little (though viewing is still very good). I realized I hadn't put one in/on with my go-to bow - my Adcock ACS "Somebody Special " yet. I remembered this pic of yours truly that my friend Chuck took that I liked real well. It was a shot setup on a White Turkey (as I recall) through a simulated blind - neat, huh? and I did well on it too. It was at Hickory NC  for the NC Traditional Bow Championships06. I had to really scratch my old headbone and dig around to re-find where Chuck had posted it.

6) "Fundin" of Sweden demonstrates/practices his War-draw, a special draw used to gain distance with the old warbows and the fine new ones that folks like "Fundin" build. Here though he is using a borrowed light weight target bow.

Row eight: 1) Another pic of "Fundin" making a War Draw for elevation and even more distance. I hope to be getting some more pics from him of folks at full Draw with his bows (some in Period attire).

2) Is Dan Jaquay ("Jake") and look at those "Boa Constrictors" as he puts a great full draw on his beloved Brackenbury (or Brack as proud owners call them).

3) & 4) are a couple more scenic and interesting Full Draw pics provided by Terry Green of tradgang.com.,

5) My good friend Chuck Sinclaire ("snakewood3") Drawing Down on a 3D target at ATAR06 with one of his Adcock bows. I met Chuck 3 years ago at ATAR when we both were doing some of our first practices with our Adcocks on the bags. We hit it off and have done a lot of shooting with each other at shoots since then, along with

6) Chuck's fine young son Cal who is a pleasure to be around and shoot with. He has a great sense of humor, is polite, pleasant and a heck of a little shooter.

Row Nine: 1) ber643 ("Who he?") Bernie, bern, ber, B with my Adcock at ATAR06.

2) This is Chris Lutz ("GAstickbow" ) I met Chris and his fine family through Chuck (at the next ATAR after we had met) - and have shot a lot with them since then also. Here (for some reason) Chris (at ATAR06) is mostly hiding his bow from the "cameraman" - his pretty wife. I know it is not because he is ashamed of either the bow or his shooting - he's just "zoned in".

3) Chris's wife Chrissie (that's only slightly confusing at times) using her good form to nail a 3D bear at ATAR06 and

4) also to tackle an Elk there - Chrissie is a very pleasant shooting companion with just about anyone.

5) This is their pride and joy - young son Slayton, an ardent young shooter that gets better each time we meet up. Here he is after that same Elk as his Mom at ATAR06., and

6) now after a Deer - Raccoon hat and all.

Row Ten: 1) My neighbor's Son - Sean Mason (who I am showing how to shoot) at his second lesson. We've known Sean since his folks adopted him as a baby. I picked up a small fiberglass bow at the flea market and made a Flemish string for it and am letting him use some arrows I put together for my Greatgranddaughters when they get old enough. Also a Youth Arm Guard I got from Mike's Archery Leathers. I hope to help Sean make his archery merit badge in Cub Scouts - I trust his form will show much improvement quickly - once we get past Deer season - LOL.

2) Here is another Former Marine Eric Zuniga ("SoTXpigslayer") also known as LBSC (Little Brown Santa Clause) for his generosity, cooking provided, and good nature. While stationed at Camp Lejeune here he married a girl from a nearby town. They come up from Texas about once a year to visit her folks and we were able to get together for a couple of shoots this year while he visited. Here he is shooting off my tower - a most enjoyable chap to be around and shoot with. He also got his first ever "Robin Hood" shot while shooting on my targets - unforgettable.

3) Another of our brethren from above the Border - Jake H ("Thjalgrimr") submitting this special shot at Full Draw in a Canadian snow fall with the sun reflecting in the snow flakes - one of his favorites and perhaps to become one of ours too. Jake is drawing his Checkmate Crusader at the 2006 Eastern Ontario Bunny Hunt in Limerick just South of Ottawa. Jake reports no bunnies but a great time by all.

4) Pretty well known on the forums is "Jumper" (Scott Nicholson) of the military - an instrumental figure in the TradAmerica initial startup  overseas to provide traditional bows and gear for relaxation of the troops there. Now returned and on another tour with his family, in Alaska, where he sends these pics from. In this one he relaxes (at Full Draw) after work while still in uniform.

5) Scott's Son David shoots off a stump while his younger brother Tyler stands by.

6) Tyler shows us his Full Draw at a 3D shoot. The guys are looking good Jumper!

Page Two filled and we will start Page Three directly as we get our next pic - will it be yours?
