Traditional Bows Drawn, Pg19

The pictures shown on these pages are all in Thumbnail form. You may simply click on any pic to see an original, larger version. After viewing the larger print click the "Back" button in your tool bar to return to the Page of thumbnails.

Row One: 1) 8 year old Cole Malouin went with his Dad, Dan, to the Pasadena group's Monthly gathering in October, and discovered the enchantment of traditional archery. Dan, with the help of Tim Baker made a Red OaK board bow for Cole and Alex (another member of the group that day) also made and presented a Wild Plum bow to the young archery enthusiast.

2) Also at the Pasadena gathering, his wife got this Full Draw pic of Mario, "ChaskeDeerHunter" on paleoplanet.

3) Primitive Archer Oct. Self Bow of The Month was taken by Ryan Gill of FL. It is an Osage Recurve, with tips/ overlays of Ipe and Buffalo horn, and has a dyed Deer hide handle wrap. 62", 72# @ 26"  Ryan hops to hunt elk with it this year. Good luck, Ryan and congratulations on your win among a tough field.

4) Laminate BOM at Primitive Archer, for Sept., was garnered by Leroy Buckley of IL. A Tri-lam with Jatoba Core, Argentine Osage belly, with  riser and power strip of Fero Pau. Leroy teams up with his dad to make bows, with his father doing the glue-ups and him the rest. Gives them some quality time together, Leroy said. Great Bow, guys, and congratulations. 62", 55# @ 28"

Note: Due to setting up a new computer and dedicating the old one to my Web Page use only (and some illness) I have lost some headway in collecting and posting Full Draw pics the past month. Would you believe it is already time for Novembers BOM (Bow Of The Month) winners?

5) RangerB, Jimmy Blackmon of TN is back for another win with this fine Osage self bow he calls "Autumn Blaze". It is 64" ntn, 60# @ 27"

6) The laminated bow winner for November is also a return winner. Leroy Buckley, Jr.  , "wytetale", of IL made this BBB glue-up by his dad into a great winning bow of 62" ntn, 50# @ 28" It is a static recurve, with a riser and underlays of Pau Fero, and cowhorn tip overlays.

Row Two: 1) Thimo of PaleoPlanet is shown here in one of his interesting Full Draw pics with his latest bow. An Elm of Southern Indian design as seen in TBB3. This beauty is 71" long and 75# @ 28", and shaped in a Gull Wing or Double reflex configuration.

2) Krissi, the new wife of T.J., of tradgang.com, here using her wedding present bow to shoot and hit one of a number of names, posted on a target, to select the winner of a karma drawing for T.J. (and the lucky winner). Krissi's bow is a Cornplanter bow by Gharing, and we welcome her to the family of traditional archers learning and enjoying the thrill of Full Drawing the bow.

3) Adam Keiper, Adam K of Paleoplanet.com, with his new replacement bow for his ever-present and useful "suburban warfare" bow. These bows are little, light-weight bows used to wage war on garden and landscaping marauders, etc., according to Adam (and others). This one is a new back up for one he's used for years and is made from an Osage splinter. It is 50", 43#@25"and a bend throught the handle type bow. Adam  Dubbed it Halfpound, in keeping with it's physical weight.

4) This is Asier, of Basque Country in Spain, and Paleoplanet, back to these pages again with another of his fine self made bows. This one is an ELB (English Long Bow) of Buckthorn. Asier tells us Buckthorn is like "The Poor Man's Yew", in regards to it's springiness and quality. The bow is 69" ntn and 52#@28". Thanks for sharing another great bow and unique Full Draw pic, Asier, my friend.

5) "Fido Dog", of the USA and Paleoplanet.com, a relative newcomer to traditional archery but showing great form, with anice looking 55# Recurve.

6) Here is another spread (next 5 pics) of some of PP's CA contingent, the Pasadena picadors who show a great interest in trad bows, atlatls, and anything else primitive. Starting off with Big Joe at Full Draw.

Row Three: 1) Here is Dean with his fine example of the interesting Yumi style bow.

2) Next is Phil, "greenchicken", with his beautiful Osage selfbow.

3) Well known and respected author and bowyer Ted Baker with a Red Oak board bow he recently finished.

4) Ted Baker also, in a b&w with his Palm frond Yumi style bow.

5) This pretty little lass is Daisy, daughter of "boybowyer" of Paleoplanet. She is doing her very best to Full Draw one of her Daddy's recently compleated "Big Folks" bows, which she loves to do. This little gal is going to be ready to shoot when "her" bow gets in hand. Being as how we all love to see youngsters getting familiar with bows we can afford to be a bit generous with them at "Full Draw". They'll reach it soon enough - LOL. The bow Daisy is pulling here is made of ironwood and is 61", 35#@28"

6) It is time for our New Year's Shot pictures. Many traditional archers around the world (more each year) are adopting a tradition of welcoming in the New Year by shooting an arrow, as close after midnight as possible. Each year some are kind enough to record it in pictures and provide me with a Full Draw pic for these pages. New Year hits Europe before it does here so our friend "nick" from Netherland, and of PaleoPlanet was the earliest poster. Here he is in his sister's room preparing for the shot with his Hazel, Bark-on sapling bow 65" ntn 50#@28"

Row Four: 1) Nick, with the same bow, fires a burning arrow for the real moment of New Years celebration.

2) I did my welcoming shot off the lower level of my shooting tower and into a 3D Deer target. I used my "Hannah Holmi" Hickory Holmegaard bow that I made earlier in 2008.

3) This is Greg Donley, "TNstickin" of TN and tradgang shooting his welcome arrow.

4) Bobby Urban from Michigan and tradgang joined in with a burning arrow.

5) Bobby's best friend, Matty, did likewise

6) Drewsbow of tradgang also helped welcome 2009 with a good wish arrow.

Row Five: 1) Kenny Yoder, "4rnr" of Ohio and tradgang fires his arrow, and bids us all to "Live At Full Draw" at the same time.

2) Kenny"s Son, Adam joined in the festivities, as he did the last couple of years, but this year they didn't quit catch the youngster at Full Draw - but his heart was in the game.

3) Barry Loving, "bow loving man",  of TX and tradgang, and his Son, Alex get together for a tandem welcoming shot on New Year's morn. Alex is shooting his well loved Recurve but he soon wants to get a longbow so he can compeat in the famous TX longbow shoot.

4) This young bowyer is Wes White, "rwrj", of GA and paleoplanet, at full Draw with his Ironwood sapling bow. The bow is 56" overall and 54" ntn, 42#@24". The bottom limb is 2" shorter than the upper limb. Nice tiller too.

5) Tom Mills, founder of paleoplanet and resident of CA, at Full Draw with a Yew bow, as he appeared in the TV show Marvel Models, "Bullseye" segment.

6) Friend Thimo of GA and paleoplanet back with his recently finished Holmegaard bow, now beautifully decorated (by himself, of course).

Row Six: 1) Jeffery's Mom works at a PO in MO, where "Onestringer", Scott Hesterly, and his wife run their mail order shop for arrow and bow wraps. She told Scott that her son, Jeffrey wanted to learn to shoot a bow. Scott made some inquiries and product donations to a youth archery promoting organization for deserving youngsters, and soon was sent a set-up for helping Jeffery to realize his dream. Scott was able to present the bow and arrows to the youth along with a Merry Christmas wish, and some personal instructions. Though it was a cold, gloomy day, Jeffery was so raring to go he was outside and showing good form in no time at all. Good job on all hands involved. The bow is one of the venerable Wing Hunter recurves. Practice as often as you can jeff, and, above all, enjoy.

2) December's Laminate Bow of The Month at Primitive Archer site is another of Marc St. Lewis' fine bows. This one is an Ash Backed Yew. It is 60" and 63#@28" Marc as you may recall is from Canada.

3) The Self Bow honors for December were shared by a tie. This nice Mulberry by Ryan Gill, "twistedlimbs", of FL,  is 62" and 45#@25", has Black Walnut tip overlays and silencers of Bobcat hairs.

4) Also sharing the self bow honors for Dec. is one by Sean Billups, "1/2primitive", of TX . It is a Red Oak of 54 1/2", 60#@25" and is patterned after a West Coast type bow. It sports a leather and cordage handle wrap.

Congrats to the three Dec. winners, and we soon will be posting the winners for the Year, 2008

5) & 6) Jason, "D3rtyH3rry", of PaleoPlanet and MI, with a frontal and side view Full Draw of his second self bow. He used River Birch (sister staves for his first two bows). This great looking bow he backed with snakeskins, as can be seen. The bow is 2" wide, 66" ntn, and 55#@28"

Row Seven: 1) ,2), & 3) Are of Manny, of Hawaii and paleoplanet. Manny is no stranger to these pages, and/or the viewers of them. He even graces the cover, or Index, page of them. He is a prolific bowyer, mostly well known and respected for his use of Hawaii's Guava trees for most of his bow wood/staves, this being a particularly nice example. It is one of his latest, and he has made it for his own hunting bow. It is one of his heaviest, at 92#@27", and is an EnglishLongBow. The first picture would surffice normally but, after posting that one, he was asked by another member to post pics that would show what a heavy bow like that would do to the back muscles. (We all always strive to get our backs into our bow shooting for the very best possible results.) It struck me that this was a perfect opportunity for other viewers here to see a graphic demonstration of "getting your back into your draw". Thanks once again, Manny, for helping to make these pages more interesting.

4) An African Bushman at Full Draw, pic taken by Daniel Rosengren, a modern day adventurer who bicycles all over Europe, Africa, South America, etc. Remember Busman are a pygmy race who normally are less than 4' in height, giving you an idea of how small their hunting bows are. They do use poison tipped arrows.

5. Another future of trad archery in the making. The son of "Oregon Okie", Russell Harrel, of Oregon and tradgang. A sunny day in the Oregon Winter prompted the young archer to tell his Dad he wanted to go out and shoot his bow. Great start on form too.

6) This is Dave at Full Draw with a bow made for him by his friend Gordon Ferlitsch. Now, Gordon labeled this picture "djewel14" and I don't know if Dave last name is Jewel, or if the bow's name is "d jewel". An argument could be made for either, or both, cases, as Gordon says this bow is the "best bow ever" made by him. Well, that is saying an awful lot in my book, so it must certainly be a real jewel! In any case, the bow, and it's graceful, beautiful tiller was fashioned by Gordon from a Flowering Plum sucker, and Gordon wishes he could find another piece of wood like it. It draws 64#@27", and Dave is very lucky to be the recipient of such a fine bow.

This amusing, self-explanatory after-message from friend, Gordon :

"Hey Bernie, I read the post for Dave's plum bow on your site. That name "djewel" came to be because this particular plum branch reared back and whacked Dave in the "jewel" when he sawed through it. After Dave recovered we vowed to name the bow that would eventually emerge from it "Dave's Jewel."

Now you know, "the rest of the story" - LOL

Row Eight: 1) As I said earlier, it is time to post the Bow Of the Year winners from PrimitiveArcher. Last Jan Self Bow of the Month was voted as tops in that field for Gordon Ferlitsch of OR, so here is another look at it. It is a beauty of a fine shooting bow made for a friend, and is of Hazelnut, with Rattlesnake skins and hardwood tip overlays. 60"ntn, 55#@26" Congratulations to Gordon.

2) We also get another look at Justin Snyder's Laminated wood BOM for June of last yea, which earned Bow Of the Year for the Utah bowyer. A beautiful short, slim Recurve of Bamboo Backed Ipe(BBI). 50" overall (told you it was short) and 48 1/2"ntn, yet drawing 50#@27". Congrats on your fine hunting companion, Justin.

3) This is Seth, the son of "boybowyer", mentioned in Row Three, Pic 5) above, Drawing a Holmegaard bow that his Dad just finished making for a friend, Approx. 35#@28" This the first Holmegaard bb made and it looks like a heck of a well done job. He says he likes it so well he hates to let it go, and may soon make another - or more.

4) This is an even younger archer getting his Full Draw start. Two year old, Russell is the son of "The Burnt Hill Archer", Phillip Seely of PA and Paleoplanet.com. As you can see, Russell's Dad has installed a rubber ball on the tip of his young archer's arrow for safety in housebound practice during the cold winter. You go, Russell, we'll see you on the 3D ranges sooner than you might think.

5) "Attenurb", DaVid of CA and Paleoplanet, provides us with this neat double Full Draw pic of a favorite helper (and eager student) around his multi-purpose shop. The subject is the son of DaVid's friend, Dr. John. His beaut of a little bow was made for him by DaVid out of Chinese Elm. Thank you, DaVid, Dr. John, and Trevor.

6) "Fundin", Henrik, of Paleoplanet.com, in a Full Draw pose with a really nice looking Bamboo Backed Ipe bow that he made. I love those BBIs - so sleek looking. This one is 50#, 64" ntn. Fundin just finished holding a school for aspiring bowyers and introduced 6 archers of varied ages to that intriguing part of our sport. Good on ya, Henrik!

Row Nine: 1) What is winter time without some snow pictures - even in the Traditional Bows Drawn Pages - LOL. The next eight pictures are provided by our friend, and fellow PaleoPlanet member, from Bulgaria, Iliana. She and her husband, Vlad, and a friend, Kosio, have been very active in archery/bowmaking promotion in the Sofia area, there in Bulgaria. Recently they found a good place to gather for shooting, bow making (and other related crafts) and took a group of friends there. These friends are all new to archery, and it's many fun pursuits, but were interested in being indoctrinated. After this recorded first gathering they are all fired up to do more gatherings and learning. Starting with picture number one we see that, as usual, the youngsters are into it with ease, right from the start.

2) Vanya

3) Vlad, Iliana's long supportive husband, took his first try at actually shooting a bow, presnted to him by "Toxiophilken", and made by Steve ("Badger") - both of California.

4) Victoria

5) Dina

6) Alex

Row Ten: 1) A closer shot of Alex, doubling up with another friend of theirs that i didn't get the name of.

2) A final interesting picture of the group, at varying stages of Full Draw. Thank you so much for letting us see this great gathering, and hopeful beginning of arcery promotion, in Bulgaria, Iliana and friends. The bows, other than Vlad's, were provided by Iliana and/or their friend, Kosio (though he couldn't be at this first gathering) but it won't be long, I'm thinking, before most of these folks will have/build their own bows.

3) We are just about due to move to Page 20 (as soon as I make it) and we will nearly finish up this page with the winners from PrimitiveArcher for the first month of 2009, Jan. Laminated Wood bow honors went to a tie between a NC bowyer and one from Germany and both were Bamboo on Bamboo - more or less. "Cooper" (Niels Bottcher), of Germany is shown here with his pretty Bamboo backed Bamboo Actionwood bow. It is 57" ntn, 45# @ 27"

4) The other half of the tie, made by friend James Parker, of NC was traded for, and is drawn here by Dana M, the proud owner. It is Bamboo backed Carmelized Bamboo, with Black Walnut riser, Cherry, Blond Mahogany laminations, and Paduk and horn Tip overlays. Another workof art from James Parker. Congrats to both James and "Cooper".

5) Self Bow win was taken by Greg Bagwell, of TN. It is Dogwood, 65" ntn, 55# @ 27" and has Whitetail antler tips. Greg stained the back with Black walnut and the rest of the bow in Red Mahogany. It also sports crushed knapping debitage dusted on the back and a Dogwood blossom on the belly. Greg named the neat bow "Blossom". Congrats, Greg.

6) To finish off this page, here is another of James Parker's great bows. This one is being drawn by his wife, who just happens to be one of my favorite folks to see at the traditional shoots/rendezvous/get togethers, etc. Not only just because she is very easy on the eye but also because she always has a ready smile when you speak to her, as well as a quick wit and a great deal of varied crafting talents and know-how. This bow by James is a 3pc takedown of Bamboo laminated to Bamboo, w antler tip overlays, and Water Buffalo bolt covers. The riser is Black walnut and Brazillian Cherry. 68", 50# @ 28"

See y'all on Page 20!
