Traditional Bows Drawn, Pg16

The pictures shown on these pages are all in Thumbnail form. You may simply click on any pic to see an original, larger version. After viewing the larger print click the "Back" button in your tool bar to return to the Page of thumbnails.

Row One: 1) - 6)  As I said on the bottom of the previous TBD Page (15), we are starting this Page off with a special pictorial about kids and archery, and passing it on. First though, Ken's ("Toxophileken" of paleoplanet.com) Sister had to set up a Birthday Party for her Daughter, Annabelle. She chose a "Little Princesses" theme and Annabelle's Grandma made special hats for all the girls. Annabelle is in the center and is also picture number 1) above.  Ken got a little confused on names of the other girls but since his Sis asked him to act as archery instructor for all the girls, we'll forgive him that - LOL. He had a ball, as did the children and he said they did very well. Now some of these "Full Draw" pics are not as full as usual but since introducing children to the sport of archery is so important (and this pictorial so great) we make exception. After all they are kids and kids are hard to catch at just the right time. Ken is a Pro Photog but this time his Sister had to do those honors, and as he well knows it is even hard for a Pro - LOL. Ya done great "Sis" and on the party too. What a huge sucess!

Row Two: 1) & 2) Finishing out the group - one girls little brother snuck in and wanted to shoot too but Bill said he waited patiently until all the Little princesses had their turn first - besides, all Princesses need at least one "Footman". Near the end of her special full day Annabelle had to rest a little during one of the rounds (on a stuffed toy from her BUF, Best Uncle Forever, Ken). Thank you and your family and friends for sharing with us and starting of this page, Ken.

3) Bill Grenoble, whom I've met a couple times or so at ATAR promised to send me a Full Draw pic for these pages - and he finally did - LOL. What a bow pic he did send though. It is his first Osage self bow and he made it in March of this year out of a stave from Pine Hollow Longbows. It is 66" long, 40# @ 28" and "shoots great". It is a fine looker, Bill and thank you. See you at ATAR BTW, the bow the children were shooting was made for Annabelle a while back by her Uncle Ken.

4) The next five pics are from another Birthday celebration from a Paleoplanet family. "boybowyer", Mark (shown in this Full Draw) and his Son share birthday celebrations, and the family went to Mark's Mom's for the occasion. Before the day was over, the whole family joined in a little family fun at archery shooting.

5) Mark's Son Seth, the other birthday celebrant. Doesn't look like he's having a bad B'day, does he?

6) Mark's daughter, Anna. Another of those fast moving youngsters that are hard to catch in a true Full Draw. However, as long as the youngsters are shooting, we know they'll hit all the aspects, and we welcome them into our world of archery.

Row Three: 1) This pretty red-haired lady at Full Draw is Mark's wife, Heather (good Irish name - LOL). Not bad shooting form either.

2) Last but certainly not least is Mom, Pat. Mark said his brothers couldn't believe it when they found out he got their Mom to shoot too. He said he told them that, from what he saw, they should all be happy she didn't have a bow and arrow when they were kids. Hmmmmm - wonder what that meant - LOL. Thanks for sharing, "boybowyer"

3) This is your host, meinsel-ef, with my latest (almost finished) self bow, doing the first shoot-in of "It", and I really love how "It" shoots, if I do say so myself.  It's an Osage character self bow (the first of any of those 3 I've made). Mostly like a plains/NA flat bow, and is 59" ntn, 42# at 25", with Purpleheart tip overlays. The decorations and/or finish I decide on are yet to be applied.

4) and here is a pic of "It" at an uncanted Full Draw.

5) Noel of Malta (also "Censu" of Paleoplanet) with a white Mulberry self bow. It reminds me a little of  my bow in that while the limbs go awry a bit at rest, the Full Draw looks like a million, and they both shoot great. Noel is in The Southern part of Malta in this pic, at a place known as Borg in Nadur (worship mound). It is the ruins of an ancient Bronze Age fortress settlement. The wall behind him is one of those that protected the settlement from enemies approaching by land.

6) Another talented international winner of BOM (for April) on primitive Archer's site. "Akila", of Romania, at Full Draw with his winning Asiatic style bow. In the Laminated class, it sports a bamboo belly laminated to a bamboo back. This is his first laminated bow and also his first all Bamboo bow, and Akila is very pleased with it except it came out a little lighter than he planned but that makes it a perfect target bow and he says he will make another, heavier one. The bow is 48" long and draws 27# @ 30" - quite fast and accurate. Congratulations Akila, and welcome to these pages.

Row Four: 1) "Ryano", no stranger to these pages, both as a bowyer, and as a winner. Ryan took first place with a spectacular job on a unique Black Locust longcurve self bow for April. The bow is a character bow that required some "fast footwork" and a lot of his very capable abilities to whip into shape. It is 66" ntn and 50# @ 28" and sprts Deer antler tips and Deer hide handle wrap, backed with Western Diamondback Rattlesnake skins. Adding to the bow's uniqueness was a natural part of it's character that let Ryan fashion a (wild but very effective) Reverse style handle. Great job Ryan, as we have come to count on from you.

2) This is 9 year old Marti, at Full Draw in his CA back Yard, with his Aunt Iliana's bow. Iliana and her husband, from Bulgaria, are visiting her sister, in the US (for her their trip here). While there they will meet with all the CA Bowyers, knappers, and atlatle, etc. folks, from Paleoplanet, that  they possibly can. As you can see Iliana will find time to teach Marti a thing or two about archery and bows. As his form shows, she says he is a natural and she thinks she will leave her bow with him when her visit ends. You go, Marti!

3) This is my young friend, Sal Sinclaire from Tx, and this is a news release:

May 3rd and 4th Childress resident Cal Sinclair competed in a traditional archery tournament in the city park at Memphis. Over 90 competitors attended from Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
Traditional archery involves the use of recurve or longbows with no sights or release aids. Cal shoots a bamboo and carbon fiber longbow custom made for him by Roswell, N.M. bowyer O.L. Adcock.
The main competition range consisted of 25 3-D targets at ranges from 15 to 30 yards. Up to 12 points per target can be scored. Cal shot a 213, the second highest score for anyone, including adults.
Following the primary competition there were 7 shootouts at distances from 75 to 40 yards. The winner being determined by whose arrow struck closest to a 1 inch dot placed on various 3-D targets. Cal took on all competitors, which were all adult, and walked away with the 75 yard and two 40 yard wins.
11 year old Cal is the son of Charles Sinclair and grand nephew of Dr. J.J. and Margaret Westenburg. He attends 6th grade at Childress Junior High.

This was my reply:

Outstanding! What a showing from Cal. What a dyn-o-mite young man. Tell him I am so proud of him I could just burst. Thanks for the pics and that Full Draw really shows his focus which is what makes him the shooter he is. I am convinced that same focus, if all goes well, will see him into and through any endeavor he attempts in later life. Mark my words. The FD will go in my pages of FDs - even if we can't see the whole bow - I want folks to see the focus!

.NOTE: Within a month of my posting this, the home of this fine Father (and friend) and his two sons, was destroyed by a Tornado. Thankfully all three people were all right but they must now move, again.

I got way behind on these pages again while I went to a couple of shoots and was involved in the Great Annual St. Jude auction on TradGang.com - now I will catch up. That being said I have over 60 Full Draw pics that I saved to catch up on, and some of my captions may be sketchy from lack of memory.

I'll pick up with another great party (Birthday) held by Toxiophileken's Sister , this one for her younger son, Justice, and based on a Safari theme. I may not have all the captions I like to do but the main thing is it is more proof of youngsters being introduced and tutored in our chosen fine sport. Many of the same children were at this second party but more boys attended this one - LOL

4) Justice's Sister Anabelle helped set the theme, resplendant in her safari outfit.

5) Justice just wanted to shoot.

6) Also this young lady.

Row Five: 1) Another young reveler (and future archer).

2) & 3) This youngster gets some elbo guidance from Ken.

4) While this one is lookin' good.

5) Here Marilyn gives it a go.

6) This is one of Ken's Nephews, Luke, and has shot with his brother Zack, and Ken, in these pages before.

Row Six: 1) & 2) More Full Draws from Luke.

3) Ken's Younger Brother, Dan, also came to help with the coaching.

4)Dan with Emma.

5) Dan with Marilyn.

6) Dan with Zoe.

Row Seven: 1), 2), & 3) Ken also coached Zoe and she was selected by all hands as the archer of the day. What another great party for these fine youngsters. Kudos to all.

I was able to get quite a few Full Draw shots at the Baltimore shoot in May, I'll do my best to remember names. What a great time we all had together. The Full Draw pics were mostly taken by me, or someone using my camera at times - LOL.

4) Oh this guy I know - it's me.

5) This is Bob - "Neon Butterfly" Finally met him this time.

6) Larry - "Snakeeater", of one of the local clubs and a friend of 3 years.

Row Eight: 1) Scott Thompson, met this time, from up that way and fine, pleasant guy to shoot and talk with.

2) Tim or "SuperKodiak38", a great friend of three shoots there.

3) "Big Country", super nice guy who took the 3day course to build a self bow there at the meet - and this fine looking bow is the result. Met him on the forums and finally up there.

4) Another of Big Tim (What a shooter).

5) Dear old friend, Dave, "Doc Nock", of about 6 years, who was/is nursing a shoulder repair back to health

6) Another of Scott, also a good shooter.

Row Nine: 1)  Clark, "Mockingbird", another good and long-time friend, who just happens to be Killdeer's loving Husband.

2) & 3) A young shooter and his Father that we let "shoot through" our larger group, so we wouldn't hold them up. A very pretty Wife and Mother was with them but not shooting. I didn't get their names but they got the link to these pages later in the day - so maybe they'll fill it in for us.

4) A little better angle/picture of Clark.

5) Your host - namely me, again. Oh I was shooting my first self bow and Osage, "It", and was pretty proud of it, and it's behavior.

6) One of my very dearest friends, Kathy, "Killdeer", "Killie", shooting her hot Centaur.

Row Ten: 1) Another angle on Killie.

2) This is Skippy, a most pleasant chap to shoot with, and no slouch either.

3) "Miagra Bill", with a ready sense of humor, makes real good shooting company.

4) Bill, "Peckerwood", one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and another 3 year friend at most of the shoots I go to (and a lot I don't - LOL) Great shooter (though he doesn't say much about it), and maker of beautiful bows.

Good Lord willing, perhaps we'll all meet again at B'mor, in 2009

.................................................................................................

This next set of "catch-ups" are Full Draw pics from a great thread on tradgang started by Killie because she overheard someone saying shooting wasn't for girls. Can you say Red Flag and Bulls??? Let's never hear that kid of attitude. The thread had a lot of other great pics and entries in it also - that I ascribe to - but here we are just dealing with Full draws of traditional Bows. Again i may not have full info but the FDs and shooting form are there as well as the beauty of the bows.

5) To Start off on the right foot, a Picture of our Killie in 1969, with a little help from her grandfather - bless their hearts.

6) Becky at a shoot - notice the number of other girls in the background too
