Row One: 1) This is "bluedograins", Randy Rains of paleoplanet. I received this Full Draw pic from him this AM and started to laugh as I thought I already had it posted. Turned out I did not. Apparently I saw it, intended to go back and get it, but never did. I'm sorry, Randy. It is a neat one to start Page11 with as it is about as close to a stoneage bow as you get these days. It is from a 3" Dogwood that randy harvested and worked with all stoneage/abo tools, from start to finish. On top of that he is using dogwood arrows (also stone age), and a string made of Dogbane he harvested himself. Good job and diligence, Randy, and thanks for "jogging" me by sending the pic along.
2) As promised on the previous page, here is Thimo at Full Draw with the Dogwood bow he made for "USMCSniper" in trade for a knife that Sniper made for him. Also a closer look at Thimo's great artwork on the bow back.
3) Another of our Young folks applying their talents to making bows (Doesn't it do your heart good?). "aboriginal", of paleoplanet and MS, made this one back in Nov. out of Red Oak. It is 72", 40# @ 29". It sports a Squirrel skin wrapped handle, Tulip Poplar tip overlays, and a Dark Walnut stain job. Nice job on the bow and great looking tiller, aboriginal. We'll be looking to see more bows at Full Draw from you.
4) Well known on tradgang and outdoorcore as"stickshooter", for his knife and antler art as well as for his generousity, Frank S., at Full Draw with his gorgeous Birthday Bow, made for him by friend Mike ("Bodork"). It is a laminated bow 62", 53# @ 29", with a Moose Antler inlay on the riser and Big Horn Sheep horn splices in the tip overlays. The riser is Osage and Cocobolo with Bloodwood accent stripes highlighted with Curleymaple pinstripes. The limbs have Actionwood cores and Osage veneers, with Ebony and Cocobolo splices toward the tips, seperated by Curleymaple and Bloodwood. The tip overlays are Cocobolo spliced with the Big Horn Sheep horn with accents of black phenolic and Bloodwood in between. They are on top of black phenolic. The overlay on the back of the riser is Moose antler over black glass. The weeping heart is Bloodwood inlaid into Osage into Cocobolo over black glass. Nothing to weep about in that bow, huh, Frank? (Great job bodork!)
5) Mark Fedrizzi of tradgang and NY provides this double Full Draw pic of his two Sons in tandem. Travis, six, in Blue and Peter, 8, in Red. Both already displaying good form with a couple of those great Elk Ridge youth bows. Great pic, Mark and, guys - thank you for joining us in these pages.
6) This is "Jenes", from paleoplanet, at Full Draw with (to my eyes) a beautifully tillered slim bow. He made it and now has a "riddle" going on at the planet to guess the two materials (of plant origin) that it is made of. I couldn't wait to post the pic of the beauty, and will fill in stats as I get them. Turns out the bow is Bamboo Backed Bangkirai and the Bamboo has had it's nodes sanded very smooth, almost to the point of not being visible.
Row Two: I was able to lift 6 Full Draw pics from Ken's Pictorial on the Chamberlin Ranch 2007 Traditional Shoot in CA so I slipped them in, all on one row here. This shoot is held annually to raise funds for Children's Charities. Thanks again, Ken.
1) John Burns brought some Canes to share and got to try out a Bundle Bow that one of the young budding bowyers made with some of them, on the spot.
2) The maker of the Bundle bow was none other than Steven Saffold, the knapping, bow shooting, bowyering son of CA Bowyer of Note, Richard Saffold. Here Steven shows the fine curve of the Cane Bundle Bow he built. I knew about Steven before I knew about Rich actually. I'd "talked" to Steven often on the Knappers Forum at paleoplanet and he's not only a talented knapper but also a real nice young chap.
3) This is Mike, the Father of Derek, a relatively new member of the Pasadena group out there. Mike used to shoot as a younger man, and he and his wife joined Derek at this shoot. As Ken pointed out, it is great how archery draws families together for its interest, challenge, and above all fun. Mike is displaying good form with a bow that Derek made recently, and dyed with green leather dye.
4) & 5) Steven Saffold taking the long shot at a bear, with a great bow that "Iktomi" made for Richard, and then a kneeling shot at a bedded Elk under a tree.
6 To finish up, another Saffold, Timmy (I believe Steven's younger brother), setting up to take a poke at one of the innovative targets at the shoot. There is a Turkey in the top hole of the old stump, and also a Raccoon in the lower hole.
Row Three: 1) "Sebbishop", Seb Bishop, a young bowyer from England, back this time with his newest Osage Warbow, with horn nocks. it is tillered at 32" but the reading is 90# at 30". Seb says so far he's only drawing 29" but his arms and shoulders still must have some steel in them. That is a "Hoss" bow!
2) A young "Robin Hood", 6 year old Elijah, at Full draw with his Little Bear bow. This pic provided by his Father, "Reviveourhomes" of outdoorcore and GA, with his welcome blessing. Thank you Roh and Elijah.
3) This is Justin Bell, "Jbell" on primitivearcher, at Full draw with an outstanding Character snaky Osage, backed with snakeskin. Justin had to 'snake" this fine bow out from between a slug of knots. It also has a innovative Turtle shell arrow pass and is 62", 58" @ 26". The bow's name is "Chief Naughty Hedge"
4) Here is Jbell's very game daughter, Audrey, trying her valiant best to get "Chief Naughty Hedge" to Full Draw. She is the owner of Justin's very first self bow, and we hope to have a pic of her at Full Draw with that bow soon, and one of her brother.
5) Now we have Brother, Andrew, at Full Draw with his Bow "Orc Slayer", a Bamboo Backed Walnut. Justin made both Andrew's and Audrey's bows earlier in his bow building, and they came in well under weight - which was very good for his Son and Daughter.
6) Now Audrey Full Draws her own bow, "Little Cutie", an Osage Orange. Nice form on these young folks, Justin, and great looking bows. Thanks for sharing the pics with us.
Row Four: 1) Adam Keiper of paleoplanet, at Full Draw with a great snakey Osage bow he made for a friend - to replace a bow that friend lost. This bow is 68", 55# @ 29" and made for left hand use. He also gave it a nice earthy dye job. Although Adam is not a lefty he shows that he was more than capable of shooting the bow in for his friend before sending it to him. Good form, especially for a non-lefty, Adam.
2) & 3) Gordon F, considered a regular guru of Vine Maple selfbows by many (seen elsewhere in these pages), decided to tackle his first Laminated Wood bow, his first Yew bow, and first encounter with Bamboo - all wrapped in one. He succeeded with this fine Bamboo Backed Yew. 65" ntn, 55# @ 27", with Black Water buffalo Horn tip overlays, and brown dyed Elk hide (Strunk style) laced handle wrap. He had a little problem area he felt it would be best to strengthen and wrap, so put a matching wrap on the other limb. Another beauty, Gordon
4) Here is friend Pat B once more, with an Osage Splinter bow, in a very neat snaky configuration, that he made for a youngster or lady - 61 1/2" t/t, 35# @ n24". As you can imagine Pat is not at his Full Draw but at the full draw of the pretty little bow. The bow has Black walnut tip overlays and riser, making for a very nice contrast.
5) Pat B again with a Tri Lam of Bamboo Backed Hickory and an Osage belly. He named it "Trouble Maker" because he had to make a number of difficult bowyer saves on it. However now he has a great arrow spitter of 61 1/4" t/t, 53# @ 26", with Bison horn Tip overlays and Whitetail anter tip tops. It also, like the previous Osage splinter bow, has a Hemp handle wrap.
6) "Madness552" (aren't all of us trad archers just a
little "mad"?
)
of the forums and NC, Barry Clodfelter at Full Draw. I expect to get bow info
from Barry shortly. I also may get to meet him at Hickory, NC shoot, Memorial
day weekend.
Row Five: 1) "juri" of paleoplanet and Finland, with a really nice Bamboo Backed Bulletwood with Bubinga tip and handle overlays. The bow is 64" and 50# @ 27". Inside that handle wrap is a well executed take down sleeve that Juri also built.
2) Again, "juri" at Full Draw in some of Finland's winter scenery, with a self ELB of White Ash. 70" long and 45# @ 27". Thanks for lending your fine bows and FD pics to add to our pages, juri.
3) "tradbowr", Pete of primitivearcher forum, with his beauty of a Tri-lam bow, at Full Draw. 65 3/4 t/t, 64" ntn, 50# @ 28" and has a Raw Bamboo back, Bloodwood core, and Bamboo Flooring belly, with Bloodwood tip overlays and Kingwood and Brazilian Cherry riser. A beautifully made bow with gread treatment of the fine choice of woods.
4) & 5) "Reviveourhomes", Lewis at Full Draw with his recently completed Hybrid T/D longbow, 57", 53# @ 26". This is only Dan's third bow and it is a beauty. Osage riser and limb cores, with Zebrawood limbs and Clear glass lams. Also Zebrawood wedges, Antler tips and antler limb bolts by "sticshooter. Great job, Lewis. He says this one is staying with him - forever. He also says if he can get his shop set up right, he is going to be building bows for a living.
6) "Esquire", Mike (?), of Outdoorcore posted this Full Draw pic of one of his boys, and another looking on. Nice pic, Esq..
Row Six: The 2007 KY Klassic was this past weekend and Mike Miller and his "Crooked Stic Gang" of Crooked Stic Bow owners/shooters were there in full force - enjoying the good life at a class traditional archery shoot. He was also kind enough to take, and send to me, the following two rows (almost) of Full Draw pictures. Thank you so much, Mike.
1) "C2" Curtiss Cardinal
2) "Dalebow", Dale Charles
3) "Mystery Dave" (Don't ask me - LOL)
4) Ruth Charles
5) Becky Brown, in her "Smurf Boots" (Mike Miller tol' me to say that - LOL) Coming up out of the creek is the Charles Beagle/Pointer mix, "Gale" - keeping the whole gang "on the right trail".
6) Kevin Brown
Row Seven: 1) Here is ol' "CrookedStic" himself, Mike Miller, the bowyer of all these fine Crooked Stic bows.
2) Alan M., the son of "Brutus", with his new to him Crooked Stic Bow that was gifted to him by Curtiss Cardinal and Mike Miller.
3) "Bluegrass", Mike Murphy, sometimes known as "Larry the cable guy" (Mike tol' me to say that too - snicker, snicker).
4)Elizabeth, "Brutus'" wife.
5) and Miranda, Daughter of "Brutus" (Where's the Big Guy - Brutus?) Thanks again "CrookedStic". I decided Miranda deserved a little better "Coming Out" - of the bushes, LOL - so here's a "Classic" Father/Daughter pic.
6) Ah! Here is Brutus. Mike had a brain burp when sending the pics - LOL. AND Brutus is sporting one of the T-shirts he had made up for the gang. The shirts read, "Be a straight shooter - shoot a Crooked Stic". Neat, huh?
Row Eight: 1) "Greenchile", Greg, part of the Pasadenna gathering for April, kneeling to Full Draw under some bushes.
2) "Badger", Steve, shows an aerial full Draw at Pasadenna with Tim Baker's 50 # @ 30" Poplar D-bow.
3) "It has to start somewhere," before one gets to full draw. Three Navajo Children visited the Pasadenna gathering and the guys strung up some Branches for them and taught them the basics. Katianna - 8, Ryan - 4, and Caitlin - 4. The kids spent hours shooting and never seemed to tire of it.
4) Ryan begins to get the hang of the Full Draw while Caitlan looks on.
5) "Redhorse", a bowyer from paleoplanet, at Full Draw on his handsome red horse named "Carlos"
6) The Battens are a local family of traditional gear archers and fine gents who do quite well for themselves at tournaments. There is Don and his three sons (one is taking a break from archery for now, in favor of girls - he'll be "Bahck") and now they are training another generation - Don's Grandson, Taylor.
Row Nine: 1) The Battens have there own little home range and also an aerial target launcher. Here Don and Son Brian, and Brian's Son Taylor all cut loose at the elusive discs. Though Don and Brian have released their arrows it is a good display of their follow through, which may well help their performance in tournaments. Taylor already knows a good example when he sees it and follows suit. These poor guys try so hard to get me Full Draw pics but they draw and shoot so quickly and naturally that the camera most always seems to be behind them a tad.
2) Here newbie Taylor Batten shows them how to do a Full Draw, While Uncle William (the youngest Son) works the launcher for him. Great going, Battens!
3) "Deadsmple", Vaughn of New Jersey and tradgang sent thi new Full Draw with his new Mahatango longbow. Looking good, Vaughn, and thanks for remembering us. Enjoy your new bow!
4) & 5) "tpoof" of Saskatcewan , paleoplanet, and primitivearcher returns with Full Draw pics with his recent sinew backed Elm Recurve. Last time we saw tpoof he was outside, in the snow. This bow has pin knocks and he decided to put overlays of Ebony wood (not the norm) on it and they really look nice.
6) This is Caitlin Cannon displaying great form at Full Draw. She is the pretty, young Daughter of "Losthawg", Tracy Cannon. She also is displaying her new knife she won in one of about 4 Kids Knife give-aways by "Stobber". Tracy said, after the pic to show the knife off a little, he had her move it to the other side to make sure her bow string didn't catch on it. Good idea, Tracy.
Row Ten: 1) "n2everythg", Wade S. of the Pacific NW and paleoplanet, at Full Draw with his Hickory character bow - 55# @ 30"
2) The next 12 pictures (extending onto Page 12) are Full Draw Photos, without many comments or bow stats - just good pics - from a shoot at Conejo (Simi Valley), CA. We start off with "toxophileken" stretching a bows limits.
3) John S. at full Draw to shoot under a rope.
4) Jon L. in a Crouching Full Draw.
5) Phil D.
6) John S. Takes a Full draw position from a Blind.
The rest will be on Page 12 - see ya there!
