Traditional Bows Drawn, Pg10

The pictures shown on these pages are all in Thumbnail form. You may simply click on any pic to see an original, larger version. After viewing the larger print click the "Back" button in your tool bar to return to the Page of thumbnails.

Row One: 1) "Iktomiwicasa", of Northern CA and paleoplanet at Full Draw with a bow he made for a swap draw (B.I.T.H.2007). Iktomi also made the Hickory bow look kinda like Osage with some creative staining. It's 70" ntn, 77# @ 28" A beautiful and sturdy bow for some lucky (strong) recipient.

2) & 3) I'm gonna slip in beside iktomi with my (now) finished FIRST self made bow. It's a Hickory Backed Massarandruba (Beefwood) longbow, with Brazilian Cherrywood handle, and Bloodwood tip overlays. It's name is "Ol' HB". I am still trying to decide whether to apply a leather, or wrapped cord, handle wrap on it (so I guess it isn't really finished ). I cut and applied a Sealskin rug, and used a Bear arrow pass pad. It is 67" ntn, 40# @ 27" and a sweet, smooth shooter. I finished it with a number of coats of MinWax Polyurethane in Satin (for less glare) and a final coat of Johnson's paste wax.

4) I'm honored to have "Stovie" on the other side of me with another of his inventive pictures, great bows and fine form from any position. What a Full Draw Picture this is!

5) & 6) "Asiertxu", of Bilbao and paleoplanet has been devoting some time recently to keeping a promise to a friend, making her a fine little bow. He made her this beauty out of a light weight piece of Rattan Cane. Asier shows us the beauty of it's Full Draw and great tiller in both an outdoor and an indoor pic. The Bow is decorated with bands of linen string wraps dyed black and left white. Approximately 20# @ 28". He likes it so well we expect to be seeing a hunting weight version from him in the future.

Row Two: 1) & 2) A "St. Paddy's Bow" on St.Patrick's Day - can't beat that with a big  ... shelaighli. Ryan O'Sullivan Made this bow both for St. Patrick's day and to Turkey hunt with this Spring. A great looking short (50") Osage pyramid bow with reverse handle and recurved tips, 45# @ 27". As Irish as Pat MacGinty's pig, be gorrah, what with the "wearing of the green" that Ryano decorated it with. A fine day ... er, bow for the Irish! Ryan is all "greened" up for it too and this is/was being posted on St Patrick's day!

3) "greenchicken", Phil, at Full Draw with his "breakthrough bow", in which he accomplished many firsts in his bowyering. One to be proud of, for sure. 53# Osage with Ironwood tip overlays and cord handle wrap. As pointed out on paleoplanet, it is plain to see Phil's dog approves of it too.

4) Sunday the 18 of Mar., our local (mixed) club, Hubert Archers, held their 4th Annual Buzz Luhm Memorial Shoot, in conjunction with one of our regular shoots. For that particular award, only the Traditional bow shooters compete. I was able to get pics of some of the competitors at Full Draw, during their practice sessions. Left to Right: Wes Barton (2nd Place - Treadway bow), Dave Bishop (Great Plains bow), Hugh Overstreet (I forget bow), Don Ostrander (Morrison bow). Winner was William Batten, and 3rd was William's Dad, Don Batten, but I didn't get FD pics of those two on this day, though they appear elsewhere in these pages).

5) This is Nick Luhm, Son of our late friend and member, Buzz. The memorial Shoot is, of course, in Buzz' honor. Nick took time from his duties as as Assistant coach at an upstate NC high school to attend the shoot. Always a pleasure to see this young man that Buzz would be so pleased with. A credit to his father.

6) Here Jim Cross, our past president and current Recorder, A retired Air Force Col., at Full Draw with his Bob Lee T/D longbow. Jim had the distinct pleasure of shooting the course with our late friend's son, Nick on this day.

Row Three: 1) "outdoors girl89", of paleoplanet, is another budding young bowyer and at Full Draw here with her first bow. It is of Hickory and 61" long. Meg intends to finish the bow in a spray gloss finish. She also hopes to start hunting next year, after she gains more confidence in her shooting. You go, girl! Meg's Brother, "huflungpu04", is also a young bowyer and she credits him with inspiring her to try her hand at it. We'll be looking for a Full Draw from him one of these days too.

2) "turtle", Steven Bennett of Ohio and primitivearcher.com, at Full Draw with a fine character Dogwood bow he made from a 2" sucker. The bow is 63 1/2" and 52# and the tiller is spot on it seems. "turtle" says it shoots smooth and accurate. He also spent some special time and thought on a very nice job of decoration.

3) "Nate" on a "visit" from Canada, displaying not only his Full Draw but also his inventive bowyering with three new bows of his. This one is a 68" ntn Bundle Bow of butted Bamboo pieces and wrapped with Jute and Sisal. It draws in the 40# + class.

4) Here the second, a Burr (river) Oak stave bow of 55# @ 28 and 62" ntn. We saw Nate with one he made from a sister stave to this one early in these pages but he says this one he likes a little better.

5) The third he made for his girlfriend, Barb (seen earlier in these pages). This one is a Red Oak Board Bow, with glue on recurves. The recurve pieces are also wrapped with Hemp twine. The other wrappings are Sisal and Jute. 68", 47# @ 28".

6) Some of you will recognize Thimo at Full Draw in this pic. Howerver, this time it isn't with one of his own self made bows. Instead it is his bow but from the current B.I.T.H. (Bow In The Hat) primitive bow exchange being conducted on paleoplanet. Thimo's exchange bow was made by "Flyfish" (Jim of OK) and looks to be a real  good'un and Thimo was very pleased with it. More on the bow stats later.

Row Four: 1) Those Primitive Bow folks of Pasadena were at it again, for their March get together. Don't have a lot of facts on these first three pics but they are good, full of interest, Full Draws. This is Big Joe with his newly made and nicly tillered bow.

2) "Samthebarbarian" of paleoplanet was self-appointed  to protect the perimeter from Marauding Mastodon - and it is said he did a great job of it.

3) Jon displays Full Draw (of the bow, that is) with his nicely made "Rodent Reaper" to add more interest.

4)  Marlon, "heavybows" of paleoplanet with his beautiful new Yew Warbow - 76" 148# @ 32" (not misprints!) Appropriate handle he's got, huh? This bow was made for him by Mark St. Louis, If I have it straight

5) Slipping "AndreaS" (Stoter, of Germany) in here with a very nice little Osage Splinter Bow he recently completed. It is 60", 44# @ 27" ("my kinda bow" - LOL) and Backed with silk, later colored red. It also has a "Fishleather" handle (Andrew thinks it was Salmon). He says this one isn't quite as smooth to draw as his last bow pictured here but is a fast little rascal.

6) Spring has sprung, and to prove it here is your host in a Full Draw picture we took today. I call it "Osage And Pear".  The bow is my Dano Gren made Character Osage, "Sneaky Snake". 60", 50# @ 26", and a sweet shooter. The pear tree is my Keefer Pear - about 9 years old.

Row Five: 1) His First bow - "mgpuk" of paleoplanet and England, Mike has come on the scene with a great Loooooooongbow of Bamboo Backed Lemonwood for his first. The bow is 74" long and 38# @ 28" with beautiful tiller, don't you think?

2) & 3) Mike Miller, The Bowyer/Owner of "CrookedStic Bows" sent me these FD pics of a couple friends who he describes as excellant shots with their wood bows. He also says he had a ball shooting with them on a recent "Stump Thumpin'" excursion. They are Jeff and Shawn  ("JBiorn" and "Shawn" on tradgang.com). Jeff (facing) is more at Full Draw in the second pic and Shawn is more so in the first pic. Jeff shoots a Gila Archery Oak wood bow while Shawn holds court with his Yew selfbow. Nice looking pics, bows, and  background. Thanks for sharing the Full Draw pics, Mike.

4) & 5) "Halfprimitive", of Texas and paleoplanet.com, just happens to be a 14 year old bowyer and has already been making bows for 2 years and, "... don't plan on stopping any time soon." Here Sean (Billups) is at Full Draw with (both) his first Osage bow and his first Character bow in one, which he has done a beautiful job on. I,  for one, don't think he should stop - any time. This bow is 60" and 43# @ 23"

6) "Benha" of tradgang and KY, GeorgeStamps shows us a fine Full Draw, and in a place where it looks like,to me, one would see a deer any minute. George is drawing a Seven Lakes Longbow with a Cocobolo riser, Bocote limbs, and Osage cores. It is 66", 55# @ 28" and i thank you for e-mailing me the pic this AM, george.

Row Six: 1) I also got this "purty" pic, in a PM on tradgang, this AM. It is from "Islandlongbow" (Jerry Scoville) of tradgang and Hawaii. I told Jerry that the picture made me "Islandsick" - it's relatively widly known that Hawaii is my favorite place that I've lived, in the whole world - and I've never disliked any place I've been. Jerry is shooting a Liberty English take down longbow, straight limb of 66", 50# @ 28" and says it's, "fun to shoot."

2) Finally another shooter who is part of a period hunting group, does re-enactment, and is in his period attire. "huntsmanlance", Lance Paulson of tradgang and OK, is an artist and leatherworker by trade, a bowman by choice, and quite familiar to most folks on tradgang. The bow is a J.D. Jones of 71", 57# @ 28". Thanks for the pic, Lance.

3) "Huflungpu04" of paleoplanet and the Midwest, also  brother/mentor of "outdoors girl89", (Luke/Meg). With a very nice Character sinew backed Osage recurve he is finishing up. At full draw it is 70 + #s right now - he may or may not take it down a little further. Lookin' gooo-od, Luke.

4) & 5) "Thimo" with another of his own War Bows. This one he calls "Black Dog" but he says it is a "female dog" and a "cur straight out of h- - -" but that he'd put her up against any. Elm, 74", 115# @ 31". It is a gorgeous bow ... and, yes, it makes me ache all over, just to see the pics of Thimo at Full Draw with it.

6) "Orien M", Orien McDonald of paleoplanet and NY, with his Osage he recently had to retiller to lower weight, due to shoulder problems. The stave came from a tree near his Parents home on the Gilla river, hence it's name "Gilla". Here he has the reborn beauty at Full Draw in interesting surroundings. The bow is 62" ntn, 50ish# @ 28".

Row Seven: 1) "sagitarius boemorum", Jaro, of paleoplanet at Full Draw with one of his War Bows. A Yew of 69" ntn and 90# @ 30" This is Jaro's first appearance in these pages but he is a prolific bowyer also and I'm sure we will see more of him and his bows.

2), 3), & 4) Three more Full Draw Pics from the March Pasadena gathering, and friend Ken (the cameraman). All three are from the same "station" on the range (probably the same bale of hay even - ) and most likely each with a selfbow of their own (though these friends do swap bows around some). In numeric order - Iktomi (Rick), Alex, and Greensnake (John). Thanks, shooters (and Ken) - now, you guys get down off there before you fall and "put your eyes out with those sticks."

5) & 6) As I always say, "Laughter is thje best medicine" and everyone needs a little "comedy relief" now and then. Orien M decided it was time to show his "War Bow" and, in keeping, dutifully put on his best "War Bow face" at Full Draw. Not to be outdone, our friend from across the waters, Asiertxu joined in with his "War Bow" at full Draw, replete with his own "War Bow face" version. Actually these are called "Skewer Bows", miniture bows that can shoot skewer arrows. The various bowyers make some very nice ones and they shoot well with them from all reports. I know the War Bow guys are serious about their bows, and bless them for it - but I also know this is the only kind of "War Bow" this ol' hoss could draw!

Row Eight: 1) Gordon F., at Full Draw on a bow with a story. He made a Vine Maple bow for a friend. The friend loved it, and used it more than any other bow. Sadly, a terrible accident occurred in which someone else ran over the bow, mangling it pretty badly. Gordon applied his abundant talents (and brain work) to the bow and managed to resurrect it for his friend. Now the pretty Vine maple Bow is 62" ntn, 50# @ 27". It has new Cocobolo tips, serving thread wraps over injected super glue repairs, Rawhide backing , and snake skins over the rawhide. It also sports a new finish and an Elk hide handle, with a Strunk Style Wrap. Beauty, eh wot?

2) & 3) "ateallthepies", of London and paleoplanet, Steve Simpson. Though he's made a few bows now, these are his first two, at Full Draw. The first is a Lemonwood Pyramid bow, stained an Osage color. Steve calls it "Two Tone" and it is 68" ntn, 50# @ 28". The second is Hickory/Purpleheart/Lemonwood, named "Lazuras", because Steve had to resurrect it once from a higher weight - to 55# @ 28". It is 74" ntn and is an ELB. As I told Steve, I'd be hard pressed to say which I liked the better of the two.

4) & 5) "Tn cliff dweller", of paleoplanet and (I assume) TN, shows us his first two bows. His, at Full Draw, is a snake skin backed Osage and sure looks nice. His Daughter is at Full Draw with the bow he made for her - a 30# Hickory. Tn cd decorated her bow for her with an Eagle Feather and her name in Cherokee on the top limb and an Owl feather on the bottom limb. I love it!

6) Miss Stovie, Jr. - or in other words Stovie's Daughter, working on a full draw with a Hazel Bow. One of a number Stovie made for the girls at St, George's Day Parade - after doing a similar work with Hazel for a recent Scout project. Methinks you are a good man, Stovie - and I love this pic.

Row Nine: 1) Here is the second pic of the BITH bows from paleoplanet. Dick Bernier ("rebsr52339") of NC is at Full Draw with his BITH, made by "Michbowguy". It is a vertical Boo backed, Boo belly bow of 74#, and has a cord wrap handle and flexible leather arrow rest. Dick is pleased with it, and why not. I think maybe his Cow Dog (Australian Blue Heeler) is a little jealous over it - LOL.

2) "aussie yeoman", with another of his deceptivly simple ELBs (English Long Bow). Like his previous one this is 66-67"ntn, 30# @ 28". Made from spotted Gum. He reminds us it is not that he can't shoot other types but he is making these for his Medevil re-enactment group interests. Good work (and favor us with some Medieval costume Full Draw pics from your get-togethers also, please).

3) This is "Boomer" at Full Draw with his BITH bow from the paleoplanet exchange, built by "badger5149", Steve. The bow is of Crape Myrtle, 65" ntn, 57# @ 28". Boomer says it is "a very nice, natural looking bow," with a hand twisted linen Flemish string, and that he can't wait to shoot it.

4) & 5) "Earl The Smith" (his handle derives from his abilities in Blacksmithing), Earl Standerford, of paleoplanet and Okinawa, has made himself a fine little bow of Fig, with White Mulberry tip overlays (due to Fig's tendency to dent easily). Here he, and then his brother Alex, put the bow to Full Draw for us. Earl has an intense interest in most things primitive, and of the outdoors. He says the fig bow has a lot of knots but seems to be tension strong. The little bow shoots with authority (he posted a video clip). Keep up the good work, Earl.

6) A bonus pic of Brother Alex making a Full Draw on what appears to be a condor or buzzard in the sky over Okinawa. Neat light effects in the pic.

Row Ten: 1), 2), & 3) "French Crow", from France and paleoplanet, supplies these extremely interesting Full Draw pics that he converted to Black line Drawings in his Photo editing Program, allowing him (and others) to check tiller of his selfbows, without background distraction. Neat, huh? the bows here are both of "Bulletwood". The first is 69 1/2" ntn 35# @ 28" while the second is a bend through the handle "Bulletwood" of 40# @ 28". The third pic has these two varied handled longbows placed side by side and you can easily see how effectively the difference in tiller shows up. I wouldn't be surprised if a number of bowyers who are not using this tiller checking aid may well start. Nice work, French Crow.

4) Another bow by "Earl The Smith". This Full Draw is with a Bamboo selfbow of fine tiller. It is 58" and 47# @ 24". Also a nice job, Earl

5) "countryboy71", Randy Black of GA at Full Draw with his BITH bow by/from "howweird", Howard. It is an Osage selfbow, with Moose hide handle wrap and a linen string. Randy says it is the fastest selfbow he's ever shot, and it will be going hog hunting with him this year. Nice bow in a nice background!

6) Thimo shows us another Full Draw type of Photographic tiller checking aid. A Negative type photo rendition. This is a bow (a beauty) he is still working the tiller on. It is for a friend, in trade for a knife the friend made for him. Thimo has done some great art work on the bow and we'll be seeing it later in these pages.

We'll "stagger" on to Page11, after a "staggering" 600 Full Draw pics - give or take one or two - on these pages.
