Row One: 1) This is Manny Padroni from the Grand State of Hawaii - Manny makes his own gorgeous selfbows (and a great many of them) from Guava trees that he harvests from our beautiful 50th state - this picture of him drawing one of his heavy weight bows, in a manner few might be able to duplicate, had much to do with inspiring this whole project - Thank you Manny. One of Manny's Guava bows took June Bow of the Month in Primitive Archer magazine (and can be seen in the Fall 2006 issue) Actually he tied himself for second place with another Guava bow, as I recall..
2) This is your host (Bernie) drawing his 21st Century Longbow ("Texas Slim") atop my shooting tower, in silhouette, backlit by the evening sun, and taken by my wife.
3)Clint Kisee (Shawnee) with the first selfbow he has made. Clint was the first to e-mail me pics in response to my request to fill these special pages - Thank you Clint.
4) Clint and his just turned two year old, Grandson Mason, with his Birthday Bow. I may not always include all pics sent (I reserve the right ... and all that stuff - LOL) but since Clint responded so quickly (and the pics are so cute, and urge us to "start 'em early" - I will in this case) - so -
5) Mason becoming one with his bow, and
6) Mason getting serious for the draw.
Row Two: 1) Brutus Hedgeapple with his CrookedStick longbow - this fine picture taken by his wife especially for this purpose (I love it!)
2) This is James Parker, arguably one of the best and most knowledgeable knappers in NC (and perhaps wider spread). He also is a bowyer of some renown especially with "Horse Type Bows". Here he draws a Turkish Horn Bow showing both his use of the thumbring, and also his handknapped broadhead, with bleeder blades that he makes (unbelievable talent in this down-to-earth guy).
3) Here is James just baby sittin' ("Hunters Are People Too", ya know) - oh, and shootin' his Horse Bow also.
4) the first of our brothers from across the border to draw for us here - Jim King of Newfoundland, Canada with his pride and joy Red Oak Board 58" ntn 50# @29" bow, with moose antler tip overlays - loo-ookin' goo-oood!,
5) Richard Nevins (Stovie) pretty well told us where he stands (to draw) by labeling his pictures - "oldcrooked2", and
6) "Rovinwithno2" Ya gotta love it!
Row Three: 1) Richard Nevins also included another of those special (bow and camera) shots called "shootingthesun".
2) This beautiful young lady (who is obviously focused full force on the spot she's picked) is the Daughter ( Kira Elise) of our Cyber-friend "TexMex" (Juan Renteria). He took her and his archery equipment to a Soil and Water conservation Picnic in TX, so they could "Show and teach" archery forward there. Bless you Juan and Kira (and thanks for pretty-ing up my pages too).
3) This is Chad Edgar ("Chad Edgar" - he says that, he knows - he is real inventive on his handle - LOL) showing us how to draw a bow in the Ohio cold. Nice pic, Chad - but now that I've been here so long, I think I'll stay South of the MD Line when the snow flies - (apologies to NH, Me and VT where I grew up.)
4) this is an unknown young archer that Don Batten took this pic of at the Sissipaha shoot in Burlington, NC a couple months ago. Perhaps one of our friends from that club will ID him for us later. We love to see the youngsters gettin' into their draw.
5) Here is Tracy Cannon ("LostHawg"), a former Air Force member, still practicing "aerial assaults" to good effect, and
6) We are not sure if Tracy is just blurry here or if he is traveling in another galaxie - but we are sure he's got a fine looking Draw there - for an alien - if that's the case. (Tracy sent me some very nice knappable rocks from Texas - they were from Texas, right, Tracy? LOL)
Row Four: 1) "Ky_longbow" (Doug Day) presents us with a draw in black and white and as he puts it - "Yes, that is a 31 inch arrow - at full draw." Whew, that draw deserves another look,
2) Doug in color with his 53# Lewis Hollow T/D longbow.
3) & 4) are Doug's Sons - leftie 11 year old Jantzen, with a Martin Recurve, and rightie 8 year old Kordel, with his longbow - showing they have progressed to mighty respectable draws from awkward positions. Ya did good, guys!
5) Fred Cioffi provides us with an extra treat by drawing a Bill Lamb Kwyk Styk, while it was at Joe Skipps Shop, and
6) A look at the other side of Fred - and the Kwyk Styk - good stuff Fred (and Bill).
Row Five: 1) Friend and Fellow Marine, Richard ("deadhorse") Cummins - also from NC I met him at ATAR the first time over four years ago, after having talked to him on the forums. Great draw fer an ol' coot, huh? (LOL - he calls me that too.)
2) Fritz Brown shows his fine form, drawing the Take Down Hickory bow that he made himself. Sweet looking bow.
3) Now we get to (kinda) envision three of our friends in one picture. In this pic Chad Jones does what he labled "shoot the moon" as he helps Mickey Lotz ("The Ferret") shoot in a bow that Mikey built for "4Nolz" (Mike Huston). Chad is a lucky chap to just get to shoot one of Mickey's highly desireable "gift" bows, and looks like he might just hit the moon with that draw.
The next three pictures 4) 5) & 6) are of one of the founders and current leaders of tradgang.com "Tarz" (Terry Green) also famous for his "Salad Hat" headgear, and drawing (and shooting) his bow under all sorts of conditions - these are just a sampling of those conditions. Note that the form stays consistent (and the salad never leaves the head - LOL).
Row Six: 1) A bowyer of high esteem from CA - Richard Saffold of Richards Bowyery (Father of a young, very good Knapper - Steven - who is a bow shooter too) - Both hang out a lot on PaleoPlanet.com in the Knapping and Archery Forums. Here Richard draws a BambooBackedIpe he built that is an everlasting beauty (I saw the pics on PP). I couldn't resist "saving" this photo.
2) Drawing on a Deer Target like it is real game, is 6 year old Justin Hall (Son of MJ Hall). Justin is also shooting a "Gift Selfow" from Mickey Lotz, made for him last year. (You da man, Mick.)
3) Although here Justin has "dropped the string" on the "critter", Mike (and I) felt the image of the speeding arrow was certainly worth including. Looks like it is headed right for the money spot too, doesn't it? Good on ya, Justin!
4) Brad Gentry- a Security Chief for a Community College, shows us how a good lawman watches his back with an excellent, turning full draw on his 64# HH Big5 bow.
5) Michael Donnigan, otherwise known as ("MI_BOWHUNTER") has been shooting bows for 25 years but just switched to Traditional Bows a year ago - and has not looked back. He is doing some stump shooting during a break in a Bear hunt in the UP of MI in this pic, with his Root Gamemaster 50# @ 28"
6) Is Jeff Harper ("Nook"), of VA, whom I've been running into at traditional shoots for about four years now a heck of a nice guy who knows how to draw a bow straight back (and how to release effectively too).
Row Seven: 1) Another Fine Gent I met the first time four years ago at ATAR in WV - Lonnie Sneed (now president of that great shoot's sponsor club). Lonnie said that to the best of his knowledge I had taken the only picture he's had taken at full draw, at Sissipha this august when we shot together. Well it appears I caught him after he dropped the string also. However, Lonnie deserves to be on this page for so many reasons. First time I met him he was presenting a quality bow to a young lady at ATAR The story is recounted in my Journal Pages in a report on that ATAR shoot - and that is only the surface. Besides all the good work he does for ATAR Lonnie has lost durn near a "Half 'a me" during the past year and those of us who know him are so happy for how much better he feels.
2) Kathy Sneed is Lonnie,s wife, and right hand helper in most all he does, as well as a teacher. This was the first time Kathy had shot a competition type shoot, and I threatened to swap my score for hers - LOL. Look, not only at her draw, but also at that snazzy, "go to meeting" quiver that Lonnie made for her. Also please note (Y'all) that Kathy is only the first adult lady archer to grace this section - hint-hint!
3) One of (local) Don Batten's three fine Sons, 16 year old William. Again the string has fallen, but William is a shooter and that flu-flu is on it's way to the disc (trust me on this) that his Father has thrown for him. (Dad got worn out and has a machine for that now - LOL.)
4) 5) & 6) Welcomes the Haag Family to these pages - they are "Flight Shooting" on their front lawn, and reflecting their Father, Curt's good form . That is Cassie and Nick Haag and they are shooting fibreglass bows, as many do for starters. Their father plans to make them both nice bows, since they have the interest he hoped for. Don't you love how kids like the three in this row seem to pick up great form? Curt is shooting a SteveWelte Death Wish of 64" and 60#@28".
Row Eight: 1) From 1999 NC State Traditional Champion Pic, John Dill. This guy has more trophies and awards than the law allows! Normally John is always smiling (almost beaming), and friendly looking, but look at the serious face when the bow is drawn.
2) A newer one of John, from at Goldsboro fun shoot we went to this early Sept. Here he is shooting my "Barb" (Dumas) Bow - a 50# BBO from Frank Rago, of GA (John promised to send some pics of his special Wife Cindy - another teacher - so I may save a couple spots on this row - Probably not though 'cause he's so slow I may just put her in her own row - that'll "teach" him - LOL),
3) John did send this pic of his friend and "great guy" Doug Carlise, whom I met at Sissipaha shoot this year in Burlington. John says Doug's cat is a character too.
4) Now the lady archers are joining in - Katherine Golightly ("Maid Marioun") draws a beauty of a self wood bow, in period attire, to add interest to our celebration of the Traditional Bow Drawn. I welcomed Marioun to Tradgang.com (as did a lot of other folks) when she first came on. I'm so glad she chose to send in this great pic, taken by her 15 year old Son, Joey Ogden, whom she says is taking a lot of very good action photos of archers - I am going to solicit more of them from him/them - I betcha.
5) This is Cyber-(and-finally-met)friend, Matt Edwards - another fine fellow from Goldsboro also shooting my "Barb" bow at our Falling Creek get together.
6) Mark Travis ("Headknocker") comes on board from outdoorcore.com to show us the draw he puts on his Kodiak Hunter - that's more "serious focus" there, Travis - thank you.
Row Nine: 1) You may, or may not, recognize this as Rod Jenkins ("SHOOTO8S"), arguably (perhaps LOL) one of the best and most knowledgeable shooters in the country, a fine stringmaker (Great Strings is his company) and has done a lot of shooting and most all the stringwork for O.L. Adcock (Oh yes, he also happens to be a fine chap by all reports).
2) Rod's very pretty, 8 year old Granddaughter, Karlie Jenkins, showing the influence of Rod's good Draw habits.
3) John acted a little faster this time and here is his sweet wife Cindy. If you go to a trad shoot where they have their vendors tent set up, she will quite likely flash you a pretty smile (while John's out shooting - either bows, or the bull ) and sell you one of the great Kanati Bow Quivers John makes, or some other needed archery accessory.
4) Note that Cindy is sending me a "secret wink" - or is it just that she shoots with only one eye open - dad-burn it - LOL. (Note: John told me it really is a secret wink - and that he is only a "little bit" jealous - LOL.), BTW Cindy is Drawing a Treadway bow made by Mike Treadway - a fine Bowyer from right here in NC
5) Since John didn't send Cindy's pic right away (and because someone asked me about this pic ;^) ) I am going to sneak right in here beside Cindy, drawing my Dano "Sneaky Snake" Osage bow 60" 50#@26" - pulling a Pat B. Snakey Sourwood Shoot arrow. In case you would like a closer look at the Bow and Arrow. Beauties, aren't they? I am so pleased with both of them.
6) Is a picture of Lynn Hayes, taken by O.L. Adcock at Salt Flats Utah displaying championship form at flight shooting national competitions.
Row Ten: 1) Another of O.L.'s pictures of an unknown flight shooter at Salt Flats 2006.
2) & 3) Linda Bone ("Ladybird") submits pics of her 23 year old Son James. He is studying for a year in Beijing, China (Chinese History will be his area of research when he returns) and took his Treadway bow with him, and quickly found this indoor archery range there. Where there is a will (to shoot), there is a way - and Linda is very proud of him for that, as she rightly should be. His Treadway bow, BTW, was supplied by Art Bennett ("olgreenhead"). Also Linda has been shooting Treadways for a couple of years, and is sold on them. She said she finally met Mike, at Denton this year, and that we can imagine his surprise, "when a strange woman walked up to him and planted a kiss on him." A "bennie" of being a good bowyer, Mike? Maybe we'll get a pic of Linda at Full Draw too.
4) Now comes Mom, Linda - Drawing her aforementioned Treadway at the Hawkeye Shoot in 2005, and telling us that since the Bones are from Canada that we now have some "Canada Cousins" joining us on these pages also - Welcome across the Border.
5) & 6) Linda also wanted us to see how dedicated an archer James really is - like, what other young archer do you see shooting his bow in his "Grad Gown" Straight from 4 years of "A"s on the Deans list at his university, on Graduation Day? Yet through all of this hard work James still remained true to his roots, and loves fishing and hunting with his Dad. In these two pics James is shooting a Bear bow.
