NOTE: You may or may not have noticed, somehow this page was mutilated in a computer crash. As you can now see, I have completed the process of restoring it to it's original condition and hope it will continue to bring pleasure to those effected by it's temporary losses 10/02/2006 - Bernie
Row One: First three pics are related to Ron Osborne, formerly of the old 7th Marine Regiment Radio Relay Section - under the leadership of your host (some 40 plus years ago). 1) Ron and grandson Kyle Jackson Oppenheim - it would appear Ron has changed some (haven't we all?) - my wife said he has a beautiful head of hair - well he did back then too but it was coal black. He also has been dabbling in some land development in the belt area - unlike what you hear about some folks being a mere shadow of their former self his daughter's husband says Ron is "twice the man he used to be". Still a mighty proud and happy looking Grandpa though wouldn't you say? He always did have a ready smile, 2) Wife Parky (short for nickname from her grandfather, "Sparkplug" that stuck albeit a little changed) daughter Cathy and her husband Mike Oppenheim (your daughter remained a C.O. even after she married huh Ron?) all showering their pride on baby Kyle, and 3) Kyle with his big sister Megan - Ron says she has so much of her grandmother in her he calls her "Sparkplug 2" - does my heart good to see one of my old troopers in a happy and lasting family situation - all of you stay happy and it will keep you young - relatively speaking that is, and the rest of this row is dedicated to a 2001 Christmas greeting to all family, friends, and visitors old and new. In some browsers it may appear under the pictures instead of beside them but no matter where it is, it is heartfelt.
God bless us all.
Row Two: 1) This is the big hog Randy took on his hunt with Allen in
Dec. of 2001 - it weighed 225 field dressed which means it easily pushed
300 on the hoof (larger "gut" allowance on hogs than on deer) and measured
six foot from snout to tail (check out the length of that snout if you
"click" for the larger pic), 2) the boar (after a huge wrestling match)
was transported in Allen's new (to him) boat, and 3) Just in case you get
the idea feral pigs are helpless check out these tusks - even with little
ones caution is always the byword while playing with these critters - oh,
the straight thing in the middle is just a stick to prop the jaw open for
better viewing - Randy said those tusks are the sharpest things he's ever
felt that isn't manmade, 4) From Allen's boat to his (and Corrie's) precious
children, son Dylan & daughter Madison - this tender shot and the next
five are in keeping with this site's premise that "Hunters are people too",
5) & 6) Madison practices some of her cheerleader moves as she finds
that her new brother really doesn't take her place with Mom and
Dad.
Row Three: 1) Dylan stands alone - well not really "stands" but you
know what I mean - you may recall friend Allen does photography
professionally and the
logo-ed pics certainly show one aspect of that professional work,
2) Madison dances too - and smiles a whole bunch (I know it's not "good
English" but it's colorfully descriptive), and 3) Madison shines -
thank
you guys for letting us share some space with your children to further
"our premise" and gladden our hearts - I for one am very happy that
Santa
Clause brought the Harris family a scanner for Christmas, 4) This is
Allen's
shot of Randy's Boar with his "real camera" as he puts it and he's done
a little (bigger) overlay of the boar's head - whatta mug - but the pig
looks good (Doesn't The Ranman look like he's having just a little too
much fun? We gotta slow him down for a while.), 5) & 6) Are shots
of
David Camp's "Buck By Default" taken by a CamTrakker (or is it
TrailTimer
Camera - turned out to be a Moultri) on two consecutive days and are
great
pics of a darned nice buck he'd been hunting for about three years - be
sure to read the full story/report on journal, Pg4.
Row Four: 1) This is also a "timer type camera" pic of another nice
healthy (younger) buck in the same area that David was planning on "saving"
until after he harvested the big guy - in the same story/report on Journal,
Pg4, 2) & 3) are published pictures of a "BEAR" story - (there is
some
blood on the bear's head but it isn't torn up like it might look in the
thumbnail - in case you want to click for the bigger view - check out the
size of the paw compared to the hunter's head) the bear measured 12ft.
6in.and
weighed over 1600 lbs. the hunter was an Airman stationed at Elmendorf
in Alaska and was walking to his hunting site on Hitchenbrook Island when
the bear suddenly stood up at 35 yards distance - dropped back down - then
immediately charged directly at the hunter who emptied his gun into the
bear - it fell a scant 10 yd. from him - he really has a tale to tell his
grandkids and is durned lucky to be around to tell it (NOTE: In the years since
I included these pics they have appeared many times and many places with all
kinds of different stories but I think this was the original news release about
them - BSD) - the pics were sent
to me by my very nice, lovely inside and out second cousin Vicki (Sylce)
Brooks (It shocked me to no end a couple years ago to find out she was
a grandmother - how time flies when life and people is/are good!),
4) Here I am by the Class and Entry Fee Info board helping to set up before
the March 3D Shoot at Flatwoods (reported in the journal) - It was chilly
from wind and since I forgot my jacket I am using Randy's (which was left
in my car) - obviously it's a little large for me, 5) Here is the intrepid
four starting (short change for the Magnificent Seven - that's
for sure) out towards the first target of the 3D shoot (Bernie, Bobby,
Randy, & Adam) - it was the first competition for three of us but Adam
was coming off a great shoot in a state qualifier the day before - the
shoot was great fun for us - oh yes, these pictures were taken and supplied
by Lee (our Hubert Archers' club Sec/Treas.) - and in the top of the
building in the background is where Camp's Archery Outlet (where I work
now) is housed, and 6) COLLEGE KIDS - Kim & Zena (Jabo &
Kat's youngest daughter and her long time friend - seen younger in these
Galleries) all "matriculated" and stuff in our local College - Zena is
studying Business Management and Kim is concentrating on Music (big surprise)
with an eye towards becoming a high school music teacher - and we all are
so very proud of their goals.
Row Five: 1) Continuing the theme of "how fast they change" here is
the latest pic of Ron's grandson (Kyle - 5 months) already more or less
upright and definitely bright eyed and bushy tailed - remember to
hug 'em bunches whenever and wherever you can - in no time at all this
one will be in college like the girls above and/or surfing the blue Pacific/CA
shores, 2) This is without a doubt the best baby picture these old, watery
eyes have ever seen - it is called Aaron In Hand and is of the new
"first born" son (2 mos.) of John Russo of Woods And Rivers outdoor website
(see # 14 on Hot List page) - thanks for sharing John, 3) Our Granddaughter Dani
from Maine @ 13 years - changing to look more like her mother (Randi - a
beautiful person) every day now, 4) here is a fair portion of the Hubert
Archers (plus a couple or three) just having done well for themselves at the Vanceboro Shoot -
standing left to right Adam - Marty - Bobby - Lee (Sec/Treas) - Jimbo - Buzz -
James Kneeling left to right Jim (Pres) - Bill -
Dave (of CA) - and Gene (Sorry for any mistakes guys but I'm still learning you all - Help
keep me straight,
Lee!) I don't know the trophies in front at all - that's for sure, 5) Lee the
following weekend (after just taking First Place in his class at another tournament) -
Bobby and Matt also placed in that one (that I know of), and 6) The larger of
two turkeys harvested by a new friend (close to my age) I met through my
daughter being their waitress recently (they got to talking and when she found
out he was a hunter and knew Maine she gave him my e-mail address) the upshot is
we are going to actually get together for a face to face as soon as our
schedules permit - but see some folks do take turkeys in NC - You
go, Bill.
Row Six: 1) This is picture of a fair portion of The Hubert Archers just prior to the Mother's Day Shoot - taken at target three which sports a 30 point buck and is dedicated in memory of David's late brother - from left to right - standing: Lee, Matt, Jimbo, John (co-worker) - kneeling: Marty, David, Robert G., Mike, Jim, Robert F., and Bernie - most of us are wearing our new club shirts but there isn't much to see from the front as our logo is on the back - we should have got Lee to put his on backwards, and 2) Another great example of the "Blanket" type Appaloosa Horse from the Silver Screen - this is "Zip" Cochise on location in the Beartooth Mountains of Montana/Wyoming for the movie "El Dorado" - Eh? Oh, the rider? Yes, Pilgrim, that is just the "Duke" himself, John Wayne of course, and 3) Jimmy pulled this off my page - enhanced it for more natural color and sent me the results - I decided to use both it and the original, and 4) Here is proof I really did take that Second Place Men's Open Class Award in the Mother's Day 3D Archery Shoot - happy old bat, huh? 5) Granddaughter Haylei (far right) at 12 years of age with a couple friends - changing fast and beginning to look a little more like her sister's (Onesty) sister, and 6) Daughter Lois sampling some of boyfriend Damien's good soup while he looks on approvingly from the back.
Row Seven: Dedicated to Granddaughter Onesty's First prom at 16 years old. 1) Hacking around before buckling down to getting ready, 2) calling friend while proud mom Lois and gramma Rose eyeball preparation results, 3) "Oh-oh, durn winter weight!", 4) Still - lookin' good in front, 5) lookin' good in back, and 6) ready to go with corsage on wrist (where else would one put it?) You go, girl! Your ol' "Poppa" is proud on ya! These seven pics and the last one on the previous row are still images lifted off a tape taken with my Digital Video Camcorder.
Row Eight: 1) Here (finally) is our son Scott ( of Maine) and his current wife Kristen with the children (from his previous marriage) - they are of course the twins Cody and Jarod with Dani in the middle, 2) As I live and breath - a real live "Whitetail Squirrel" - This is "Blondi" a squirrel that (bravely) hangs around friend Lee's homestead ("Yes - he's the taxidermist, you crazy mixed up squirrel.") - Lee says they watched him all last year with just a short all-blond tail and now this - I think he may have got his tail pinched or hurt somehow when he was a baby, 3) Onesty (front pink) and some of her music-mates in a "production number" of Breaking Up Is Hard To Do at the last recital of the school year - another still from my DVC, as are the next three, 4) Amugger (another) shot of the same production number, 5) Here The Ranman unveils his newly delivered mount of his last season's Illinois Buck, and 6) where I "deleted" Randy so we could see this fine mount (uncluttered) hanging on a tree in my back yard - MUCH better! The mount was done by another retired (or soon to be) Marine who is also planning to make his second career as a taxidermist (not Lee, but a different one found by Randy before I met Lee).
Row Nine: 1) Randy on the second eve of our recent pig hunt - showing how we had to cool down before donning a clean shirt for hunts while readying his bow & arrow - Eric was filming from above in the same tree, 2) A really good photo of a beautiful Poppy (no, it's not one of the illegal white seed ones) for contrast - sent to me by Reg of Windego - see even us crusty old hunters love beauty, 3) here are our Hubert Archers that qualified for and competed in the 2002 NC State Championships on 20 July - though not all won or placed they did all qualify for the World Competition in Alabama later this year (good on ya, guys!) - they are lf. to rt.: Bill P. - Jim C. - Lee - Buzz - Matt - Jimbo S. all are first place people anyway and first rate archers, 4) Buzz Luhm is in the "big" money with a First Place State Champion Traditional Bow Shooter 2002, 5) Buzz gets his "First Place Kiss" from wife Doloras, and 6) Jimbo Simmons finished in the money (though not a first place) in one of the compound bow classes.
Row Ten: 1) This is Karen Figgins the daughter of a Marine Gunny who co-runs Camp Lejeune's archery course and always supports our club shoots - she also took an NC State Championship in her class (Right on, Girl!) - oh and there (finally) is the back of one of our club shirts on Bill P., 2) Here our Club Pres Jim Cross presents Doloras Luhm with a "Supporter of The Year" award from Hubert Archers - she really rates it for she is always at shoots with a smile and a laugh helping out in any way she can, 3) A circulating pic from the internet that is just too good to not be a "Keeper" - the caption was an equally appropriate "Ever mistake your dog for a towel?" - The breed? Shar-Pei - must be a pup because (unlike us mere mortals) they get less wrinkles as they get older. Thanks to niece Eileen for sending it my way, 4) Our boy (?) Buzz Luhm being congratulated by our Pres. Jim Cross for taking the Down East Archery Coalition's 2002 Shooter of The Year Trophy in the Traditional Class - some consistent shooting required to do that. [I want to say here, at the risk of incurring their displeasure, that these two fine shooters and all-around nice guys have a lot in common - They both shoot the Traditional Class (old style recurve bows), both are retired military (Air Force & Marine), both have been tireless workers and promoters of the Hubert Archers club, and just this past week we found out that Jim has now joined Buzz in that elite group of warriors having to fight the damned dreaded "Big C" (I've mentioned before how I feel about that sneaky, insidious cancer blight). Our prayers, blessings, encouragement, support, and admiration for their courage go out to these two "Contenders".] 5) Two more of our club shooters that took Coalition Shooter of The Year awards - Matt McCoy (active Navy) Incentive Class and Jimbo Simmons (active Marine) Men's Unlimited Class - also more nice chaps and hard workers, and 6) A group photo of most of the Shooters of The Year 2002 (most of these not our club members) and if my memory isn't on vacation again that young man in the center of the front row (light green shirt) is Jeremiah Harrell of earlier notoriety in the journal entries and top dog in the Pee Wee Class. Nice trophies for a bunch of straight shooters. Archery Awards photos provided by friend, Lee Canady
