In the early 1900's the wild turkey was nearly gone in most of the lower 48 states . It's range from southern Main to Florida and the East coast to the Mississippi River was almost gone due to the destruction of it's habitat by man . As the land that was not suitable for farming returned to forest . The stage was set for one of worlds best comeback in the history of conservation in this country . With the remaining few birds left and the money taken in by the sale of hunting licenses , the restoration of Americas wild turkey was to begin . The great task was to capture the birds unharmed and release them in other areas were they could repopulate that area . The program was a great success that the wild turkey's range now extends from southern Canada to Mexico from the east coast to the west coast .
As the wild turkey awakens at dawn this low call is the first they make . It allows other turkeys to know just were they are in the roost .
The Cluck is a were are you type of call . When a tom clucks he is awaiting a cluck in response.
This sound is made when the turkey fly's down from the roost . Also when ever they go over obstacles or stretch their wings .
The yelp is used as a locator call so all the birds in the flock can regroup . It is a very effective call to entice a gobbler to respond during the spring matting season .
This call is the most aggressive sound a hen makes when she is ready for matting . It drives the Tom crazy .
A sound all Wild Turkeys make all year long while feeding through out the woods . It is a sign that all is well . It's a great sound to make as the Tom is coming into range .
The most wonderful sound that a Turkey hunter can hear in the field . The Tom will gobble at almost anything in the woods that startles him . The Tom gobbles to announce to the hen he is in the area and awaits her .
I find this call to be a
great call to use to locate toms in the roost I use it just before sunup

Well I'm very happy to say that
on May 1 1998 and after 2 years of saying I almost got one today. All my
scouting and planing finally paid off hunting only a couple of yards away
from my treestand on New York's opening day I was rewarded. I was set up
by 5:30 am when the first tree call was heard in the pines were Only 20
minutes earlier I walked through. My first tree call was interrupted by
a toms gobble not more than 50 to 60 yards away. As the sun broke the darkness
of the night I heard several birds flydown to the forest floor, only one
yelp and the tom was gobbling with every call I gave his gobble became
louder and louder till I spotted not one But two white heads emerge from
the pins several contentment purrs and another gobbler appeared from behind
the first two in full strut. At 6:10 am my first day of 1998 turkey Season
came to an abrupt but perfect end. Their he lay 41 yards away from were
I sat not more than 45 minutes. Weighing in at 17 3/4 lbs. with an 8 inch
beard and 3/4 inch spurs.
