Raul's Wide One

Raul Reyes, Jr. took this extremely wide buck during the 2004-5 season near Anahuac, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Perched 12 feet in the air on his tripod it was a very cold winter morning, and he was busy rattling with considerable success bringing seven different bucks to the horns on the first rattling sequence. They ranged from 2.5 to 4.5 years old, but were not what he was looking for. Thirty minutes had passed and he started on his second sequence. When he stopped it was very quiet when suddenly there was a loud noise like cattle trampling through the brush, but the cattle were in sight 500 yards down the sendero. Suddenly he was stareing at a mature and extremely wide buck a mere 60 yards away. He quickly evaluated the buck but hesitated for even though the buck was extraordinarily wide, had good mass and 12 points, it had short tines. That hesitation was almost too much for the buck turned to leave. Decision time had arrived and with a mouth grunt he stopped the buck. One shot from his 300 Win. mag dropped the buck in its tracks.

It was the right decision because the buck won the widest spread division of both the Los Gigantes contest in Mexico and Los Cazadores contest in Texas with an inside spread of 28 5/8". The gross score was 164 6/8.
