Perry's Hill Country Buck
Perry Herrington of Houston, Texas killed the fine 12 point buck shown above on the left on opening morning of the 1997 deer season in a section of Texas that is noted for the tremendous number of deer, but due to the intense hunting pressure, very few make it past 2 1/2 years of age. He and his wife, Phyllis, were sitting on a large tree stand platform that they built so that he could introduce her to hunting. For her, this was just a trip to watch because only the leasors are permitted to hunt the first two weeks of season. About 30 minutes after daylight they were both shocked to spot this beauty. Perry made a one shot kill with "her" new 7mm x 08!!
The buck on the right is Perry's latest trophy from the same lease, he and his wife hunted hard all of the 2000 season, passed numerous "average" bucks and had decided that they were going either to shoot a good one or none at all. Three days before the end of season Perry was sitting in a tower stand that had been built in the 1950s, it was made of metal and creaked and groaned with every movement, but when this nice 125 class buck stepped out Perry was calm enough to keep the noise down long enough to get off a perfect shot. His patience had paid off by dropping a deer better than his own personal best and one of the nicest bucks to come off of the lease ever.
These bucks are a perfect example to illustrate how the definition of a "trophy" buck has to vary depending on the conditions that a hunter is hunting under. These bucks are the best bucks killed on Perry's lease in quite a number of years, they were killed on open range, in a section of the state that is noted for its "German Sheppard" sized deer, and in a very heavily pressured lease that does nothing to provide supplemental nourishment to the deer. Both of these bucks have to be considered serious trophies when put in that context! Perry has to also be either the luckiest guy alive or one of the best hunters on that lease...we'll let his buddies vote on that one..!
