Zavala County, Texas
Five of us hunted a 2400 acre low-fenced ranch in Zavala County, Texas for the 2008 - 2009 season. This area of Texas has been in a serious drought and conditions were particularly bad all year with less than 11” of rainfall. We had virtually no rainfall during the critical months of March and April and therefore antlers were not optimum. We had a few deer that had adequate growth but most recognizable bucks were disappointing in antler growth from the previous year. Some even had poorer antlers than they had the previous year.
Another issue is the antler management practice followed by several neighboring ranches. It seems that every time that we let a buck get 4 years old where he is starting to show what he might ultimately attain at maturity he becomes fodder for hunters across the fence with differnt goals. That certainly is their right but killing 4 year old deer is a sure way to rarely ever see a mature buck of 5 or 6 years old. Though it is common in many hunting situations where mature hunters seek quality antlers, it has been a frustrating process to do our best to improve our hunting property and to end up with the weather and neighbors working against our goals. We know that our situation is not unique and many of you are in hunting situations far worse than ours. No matter what the hunting is like, we will always enjoy being with true friends and having a great camp life and we have that in spades...!!
