My "Best" Deer

1988 - Cambria County, PA - 9 Point
They're all great, but there's something special when you get a big one!
Got him in 1988 with the rifle after a 20 yr. dry spell. Yup, went 20 yrs. without a deer! I almost gave up hunting, but I figured, what the heck is one more year.

I was hiding in the roots of a fallen tree & he walked out of nowhere during a snowstorm. He stood about 10 yds. away & we had a staring match for what seemed like an eternity. The gun was resting on the tree roots facing another direction. After he had enough of looking at me, he calmly walked away over the side of a rim & the moment he was below the rim I picked up the rifle.

If he turned right, he was gone! If he turned left, he was mine. Well, Old "Gil" ( named for Gil Hollow where I got him ) turned left and stood broadside about 40 yds. away just after he emerged from the top of the rim again. The crosshairs found the middle of his neck & he dropped where he had his last look at me!

He still remains the camp record for the number of points. There's an eight point that has a bigger rack that Don, the owner of the camp, got a couple years before I got this one.
