The Great Kansas Doe Hut
November 12, 2001
Day One
Morning Hunt
Lonny & I went to "Rick's Place" before
daylight & settled into our stands. Around 8:00 am a doe bedded down
not 20 yards from me with a few tree limbs saving her hide. Bleats and
grunts didn't impress her except to get her ears going and turn her head.
She eventually fed off in the wrong direction and circled down below me
at a safe distance. I felt this doe was in estrous given she was traveling
alone and didn't respond favorably to calls. This was confirmed a
short time later when a small buck with his nose to the ground found his
way to where she had been bedded.
Lonny saw three bucks this morning, first
was at 7:30 with a half rack of 4 points to the one side. Next was a forkhorn
around 8:00 am and at 9:00 a four pointer that had three points on one
side and a spike on the other. On the way out Lonny spooked the deer in
the picture which was an honest 4 point and maybe a couple of slightly
formed stickers near the skull.
Evening Hunt
Travis had to work the evening shift but
I went out into the wilds of Kansas in my quest for the NWRD. The weather
remained overcast with an unfavorable wind blowing from me to the clearing
I was watching at Rick's Place. I didn't want to move to another spot and
spook any of the bucks Travis has been seeing. Game was called on account
of darkness. Stay tuned for Tuesday's hunt. Travis' vacation starts and
we'll be hunting all day.
