2005 Texas Bowhunt
Burnet, Texas
Monday,October 10th

Monday morning came at 0 dark thirty with some threatening weather. For a while it looked like we might not be going out, but a close check on the local weather radar showed the storm was likely to miss us.

We got to the ladder stands before daylight and settled in wondering what the morning would bring. I was in #18 where I harvested a ten pointer last year right after first light.

This year it was hogs that came in at first light and did they ever like breakfast! Couldn't get rid of them, so I decided to turn one them into bacon.

My arrow flew true and through the lungs but did not pass through. The boar was barely startled nor were the four others and just walked out of view carrying my arrow into some trees thirty yards away and to my left. Then to my surprise, the other hogs came back! They fed for a while and left together as calmly as they came. A small 8 point and a forkhorn came in while I was waiting for my guide to come and help track the hog, but the 8 needed another year to grow, so I didn't take a shot. I was also convinced that the hog went just a short distance and layed down for his last nap and it would be easy to find him. This was based on the fact that the other hogs stayed after my shot for so long and I actually saw them milling around near where my hog went.

It was not to be! I checked for the hog, I looked for the arrow, I looked for a blood trail, all in vain, the hog was not to be found. However, good news arrived with the guide. My son, David had arrowed a buck. He wisely waited for help in trailing as He is colorblind. David told us he counted about five seconds before hearing the deer crash off in the direction he ran. The blood trail was steady with occasional heavy spots and after about 300 yds of zig-zags there layed the 8 pointer.

A photo session occurred back at the ranch house
